Background. Postresective mandibular reconstruction is common in cases of oral and mandibular tumors. However, complications such as infection, plate exposure, or plate fracture can occur. We identified several significant risk factors of complications after reconstructive surgery and compared the effectiveness of different surgical techniques for reducing the incidence of complications. Method...

A 48 year old patient was candidate for anterior mandibular reconstruction by 2 fixtures of Branemark implant. Residual infection lead to removal of one of the implants from the extracted tooth socket. Afterwards, 2 fixtures of Bonefit was inserted adjacent to previously placed Branemark implants and final prosthesis were loaded in a joint cemented and screwed design.

PURPOSE The limitations and morbidity associated with autogenous bone grafting have driven the search for predictable bone substitutes and bioimplants. A novel method of reconstruction was tested in this case series. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ten patients with major mandibular defects following resection of biopsy-proven ameloblastoma lesions or osteomyelitis of the mandibular body or ramus were ...

Background Function and aesthetics have a significant impact on the quality of life in patients undergoing mandibular reconstructive surgery, but achieving satisfactory results remain challenging. The aim of the study is to investigate the feasibility and accuracy of robot-assisted mandibular reconstruction with fibula flap in comparison to that with a computer-assisted navigation system and th...

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of preoperative versus intraoperative mandibular contouring using rapid prototyping technology. METHODS Ten patients requiring mandibular reconstruction had a preoperative mandibular plate contoured to a fabricated 3D mandibular model based on preoperative imaging. A traditional intraoperative plate was also contoured. Two surg...

The vascularized fibular flap is one of the standard treatment choices for the reconstruction of the mandible; however, the consequences of condylar restoration have not previously been reported. The use of three-dimensional models allows for a more predictable reconstruction. The purpose of the present study was to assess the outcome of stereolithographic model-assisted reconstruction of the m...

This study describes an unusual case of mandibular asymmetry after fibula free flap reconstruction in a young man following major facial trauma that was corrected using a custom-made polyetheretherketone prosthesis. There is little information in the literature on the use of alloplasts to correct mandibular asymmetry as interest in 'aesthetic re-modelling' has traditionally focused on nasal, zy...

BACKGROUND Multitudes of options are available for reconstruction of functional and cosmetic defects of the mandible, caused by various ailments. At the present time, autogenous bone grafting is the gold standard by which all other techniques of reconstruction of the mandible can be judged. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcome of different osseous reconstruction options using a...

BACKGROUND The reconstruction of a large mandibular defect poses a challenging issue in oral cancer ablation surgery. One popular option for mandibular continuity reconstruction after tumor resection involves the use of a reconstruction plate (R-plate), which maintains space and contour without bone harvesting. An R-plate, however, cannot provide final functional loading rehabilitation with imp...

The treatment of temporomandibular joint ankylosis poses a significant challenge because of the high incidence of recurrence .The only treatment option for TMJ ankylosis is surgical with or without condylar reconstruction. Various grafts are available for condylar reconstruction after removing the ankylotic mass such as costochondral, sternoclavicular, posterior border of mandibular ramus, fibu...
