BACKGROUND Indacaterol is a long-acting beta-2 agonist for once-daily treatment of COPD. We evaluated the effects of indacaterol 150 μg on lung hyperinflation compared with placebo and open-label tiotropium 18 μg. We measured physical activity during treatment with indacaterol 150 μg and matched placebo. METHODS We performed a randomized, three-period, cross-over study (21 days of treatment s...

BACKGROUND The efficacy of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) in moderately severe COPD patients remains unclear. At the same time, the use of extrafine particles in COPD patients is a topic of ongoing research. OBJECTIVES This study assessed the effect of ICS in steroid-naïve mild COPD patients and the effect of reducing the ICS dose in more severe COPD patients previously using ICS when switchin...

Background: In asthma, small airway dysfunction and inflammation may induce significant lung hyperinflation. The aim of the study is to discover proportion hyperinflation in patient with persistent asthma Persahabatan Hospital Jakarta.
Method: A cross sectional descriptive analysis was done Asthma clinic from September-November 2016. Forty-five subjects were recruited consecutively. Inte...

BACKGROUND Functional deterioration in cystic fibrosis (CF) may be reflected by increasing bronchial obstruction and, as recently shown, by ventilation inhomogeneities. This study investigated which physiological factors (airway obstruction, ventilation inhomogeneities, pulmonary hyperinflation, development of trapped gas) best express the decline in lung function, and what role specific CFTR g...

BACKGROUND Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) was shown to be increased in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) compared to control subjects with comparable body mass index (BMI). Our aim was to determine the relation of VAT by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) in patients with COPD by disease severity, BMI, other indices of body composition and static lung volumes. MET...

The influence of vagal stretch receptor afferents on respiratory motor-output and respiratory changes in esophageal pressure (DeltaP(es)) was studied in anaesthetized cats. Tracheal occlusions and lung inflations were performed during hyperoxic normocapnia, during electrical stimulation of one carotid sinus nerve (CSN) or the intracranial medullary chemosensitivity (MCS), during hypercapnia or ...

First, the image shows hyperinflation of the native right lung causing compression of the graft lung. In one study, patients with SLT showed...

Medical treatment of emphysema does not alter the natural progression of the disease. Surgical techniques are an attractive conceptual approach to treat hyperinflation in these patients. Lung volume reduction surgery and lung transplantation are appropriate therapeutic options for a selected population with emphysema. We will review the available evidence to support these approaches.

Manual hyperinflation is a technique that is commonly used by physiotherapists to provide a greater than baseline tidal volume to the lungs of mechanically ventilated patients. The use of this technique is based more on clinical experience than on scientific evidence as the physiological effects of manual hyperinflation are uncertain. This review uses evidence-based principles to investigate th...
