1. Ca and K condition the irritability of Pelagia both in regard to rhythmical contractions and general luminescence. If either ion is omitted from the solution conduction of stimuli for pulsations and luminescence does not occur, although local responses still persist. 2. When Mg is omitted from the solution, Pelagia shows hyper-irritability with respect to rhythmical contraction and general l...

The bioluminescence of Amphipholis squamata was assessed from freshly collected individuals for 16 successive months, and from individuals maintained in the laboratory under various experimental conditions of salinity, temperature and photoperiodic regime. Field investigations showed that bioluminescence intensity and kinetics varied seasonally, with the light produced being brighter and faster...

Luminescence refrigeration in semiconductors is studied using a model that includes the rate equations for carriers and photons as well as the influence of spectral dependent photon recycling. Expressions are derived for cooling efficiency, cooling power density, and the minimum external quantum efficiency required for cooling. These results show that net cooling is accessible and that photon r...

We have studied X-ray luminescence of KNbO3 single crystal. The 575 nm luminescence band has been studied in the temperature range of 15±45 K. The quenching parameters were found to be Q ˆ 12 3 meV and m ˆ 4 10 sÿ1. No luminescence has been observed under heavy ion excitation (Kr ions, 8.63 MeV/amu) even at 15 K. A novel time-resolved luminescence biosensor assay for anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) was developed. We used a straightforward strategy to modify a known ALK substrate into a peptide biosensor that can accommodate terbium luminescence sensitization upon its phosphorylation by ALK. Since this strategy is generalizable, this high-throughput screening compatible assay serves as an example for de...

We report scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images of surfaces of GaN films and the observation of luminescence from those films induced by highly spatially localized injection of electrons or holes using STM. This combination of scanning tunneling luminescence (STL) with STM for GaN surfaces and the ability to observe both morphology and luminescence in GaN is the first step to investigate p...

Investigations into V-agent interaction with 1,10-phenanthroline nitrate Ln(III) complexes (Eu and Tb) were carried out using luminescence and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Addition of several equivalents of agent resulted in the loss of luminescence intensity and the observation of free 1,10-phenanthroline by UV-Vis. We propose a displacement mechanism in which the V-agent acts as a bidentate ligand to...

Tm3+/Yb3+ codoped transparent glass ceramic containing β-PbF2 nanocrystals was successfully prepared. After thermal treatment, emissions from the state of Tm3+ excited by 980 nm laser were greatly quenched by cross relaxation and the 700 nm luminescence from Tm3+:3F2,3→3H6 transition was strongly enhanced. A nearly monochromatic red luminescence band was observed. Based on the luminescence deca...

This paper presents a luminescence oxygen sensor for retinalhypoxia monitoring. The sensor coats a wirelessly controlled magnetic microrobot that will operate in the human eye. The coating embodies Pt(II) octaethylporphine (PtOEP) dyes as the luminescence material and polystyrene as a supporting matrix. It is deposited on the microrobot as a thin film and this film is experimentally evaluated u...

We report here the synthesis, polymerization, and properties of highly fluorescent vinyl polymers containing pendant pyrrolopyridazines. Their luminescence quantum efficiencies can be as high as 60%, and all polymers showed strong luminescence even in the solid state, which is indicative of little self-quenching in these systems. The polymers were processable into films, fibers, and rods that w...
