The concept of localized learning outlines how local conditions and spatial proximity between actors enable the formation of distinctive cognitive repertoires and influence the generation and selection of skills, processes and products within a field of knowledge or activity. The localized learning argument consists of two distinct yet related elements. One has to do with localized capabilities...

Localized morphea is a disorder of unknown cause in which there is localized sclerosis of the skin. Disabling pansclerotic morphea of childhood is a rare severe mutilating form of morphea involving the dermis, fat, fascia, muscle and even bone, usually starting before the age of 14 years. Here, an eight-year-old boy with progressive sclerosis of palmar surface of wrist and hand and digits...

The authors contend that "peeling orange" deepithelialization, a technique of scalpel deepithelialization for reduction mammaplasty, is fast and simple to master. It facilitates more rapid deepithelialization than en bloc deepithelialization, particularly with long pedicles.

Less than 10% of chondrosarcomas occur in children. In addition, as little as 0.5% of low-grade chondrosarcomas arise secondarily from benign chondroid lesions. The presence of focal pain is often used to crudely distinguish a chondrosarcoma (which is usually managed with wide surgical excision), from a benign chondroid lesion (which can be followed by clinical exams and imaging surveillance). ...

We consider shift-invariant multiresolution spaces generated by rotation-covariant functions ρ in R2. To construct corresponding scaling and wavelet functions, ρ has to be localized with an appropriate multiplier, such that the localized version is an element of L2(R2). We consider several classes of multipliers and show a new method to improve regularity and decay properties of the correspondi...

We analyze typical models which intend to describe (parts of) the dynamics of H-Bonds in DNA. We show that these models generically allow for nonlinear localized excitatons (NLEs) (discrete breathers). We especially study the scattering of phonons by NLEs and observe strong reflection of phonons by the NLE. We relate our results to the problem of functioning of a complex biomolecule, e.g. the DNA.

The efficiency of trapping an on-axis spherical particle by use of laser tweezers for a particle size from the Rayleigh limit to the ray optics limit is calculated from generalized Lorenz-Mie light-scattering theory and the localized version of a Gaussian beam that has been truncated and focused by a high-numerical-aperture lens and that possesses spherical aberration as a result of its transmi...
