PURPOSE To compare the resolution and optical quality of the ReSTOR(®) +3.0 D and ReSTOR +2.5 D multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) with the AT LISA(®) tri and FineVision(®) trifocal IOLs. METHODS Resolution, image quality, and photic phenomena were evaluated in the AcrySof(®) IQ ReSTOR +3.0 D and +2.5 D multifocal IOLs and compared with the AT LISA tri 839MP and FineVision Micro F12 trifoca...

Supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs) with masses in the mass range ∼ (10–10)M⊙/(1 + z), produced in galaxy mergers, are thought to complete their coalescence due to the emission of gravitational waves (GWs). The anticipated detection of the GWs by the future Laser Interferometric Space Antenna (LISA) will constitute a milestone for fundamental physics and astrophysics. While the GW signatu...

The space-based gravitational wave detector LISA will observe in the low-frequency gravitational-wave band (0.1 mHz up to 1 Hz). LISA will search for a variety of expected signals, and when it detects a signal it will have to determine a number of parameters , such as the location of the source on the sky and the signal's polarisation. This requires pattern-matching, called matched filtering, w...

Binary black hole coalescences emit gravitational waves that will be measurable by the space-based detector LISA to large redshifts. This suggests that LISA may be able to observe black holes grow and evolve as the universe evolves, mapping the distribution of black hole masses as a function of redshift. An immediate difficulty with this idea is that LISA measures certain redshifted combination...

The merger of two supermassive black holes is expected to produce a gravitational-wave signal detectable by the satellite LISA. The rate of supermassive-black-hole mergers is intimately connected to the halo merger rate, and the extended Press–Schechter formalism is often employed when calculating the rate at which these events will be observed by LISA. This merger theory is flawed and provides...

We report the first results of the LISA Pathfinder in-flight experiment. The results demonstrate that two free-falling reference test masses, such as those needed for a space-based gravitational wave observatory like LISA, can be put in free fall with a relative acceleration noise with a square root of the power spectral density of 5.2±0.1  fm s^{-2}/sqrt[Hz], or (0.54±0.01)×10^{-15}  g/sqrt[Hz...
