Growth factor(s) present in a spent liquid medium after culture of the yeast form of Histoplasma capsulatum enhanced both yeast and mycelial growth of nine isolates tested. Hydroxamic acid extracted from the culture fluid displayed growth factor activity.
Surface wettability is one of most important indexes for understanding the interfacial characteristics between a solid surface and a liquid, especially such physico-chemical properties as hydrophilicity and water repellency. Recently, non-contact wettability assessment by monitoring the behavior of liquid covering a sample surface by jet-flow application to the liquid has been proposed. This me...
The two commercially important apple rootstocks i.e., MM106 and B9 were micropropagated using a liquid culture system. Three different strengths of 0.8% agar solidified PGR free basal MS medium were first tested to optimize the culture media for both the rootstocks. Full strength medium (MS0) supported maximum in vitro growth, multiplication, rooting and survival under field conditions as oppos...
Protozoan hemoflagellates Leishmania are causative agents of leishmaniases and an important biological model for study of host-pathogen interaction. A wide range of methods of Leishmania cultivation on both biphasic and liquid media is available. Biphasic media are considered to be superior for initial isolation of the parasites and obtaining high promastigote infectivity; however, liquid media...
Experiments were conducted to investigate the microaerobic culture of Helicobacter pylori in a liquid medium by using gas-permeable Lifecell tissue culture flasks. Growth in Lifecell tissue culture flasks was 1.2 to 1.6 log units greater than that in glass control bottles. These results were comparable to those reported by the use of gyrated media.
The aim of this study was to establish an adventitious roots culture system for sterile plantlet segments of P. tunicoides and improved the accumulation of total saponins in cultured roots. Psammosilene tunicoides is a native Chinese plant with high commercial value as medicinal herb. Combination of NAA and IBA significantly affected the adventitious roots formation on agar-solided B5 media and...
In synchronized continuous cultures of Saccharomyces cerevisiae CBS 8066, the production of the extracellular invertase (EC 3.2.1.26) showed a cyclic behavior that coincided with the budding cycle. The invertase activity increased during bud development and ceased at bud maturation and cell scission. The cyclic changes in invertase production resulted in cyclic changes in amounts of invertase l...
Bryophytes, or mosses, are considered the most maintenance-free materials for roof greening. Racomitrium species are most often used due to their high tolerance to desiccation. Because they grow slowly, a technology for forcing their growth is desired. We succeeded in the efficient production of R. japonicum in liquid culture. The structure of the microbial community is crucial to stabilize the...
BACKGROUND Bacteria use N-acyl homoserine lactone (AHL) molecules to regulate the expression of genes in a density-dependent manner. Several biosensors have been developed and engineered to detect the presence of all types of AHLs. RESULTS In this study, we describe the usefulness of a traI-luxCDABE-based biosensor to quickly detect AHLs from previously characterized mutants of Burkholderia c...
Leishmania braziliensis braziliensisíMHOMlBR1751M2903) was grown in Schneider's Drosophila medium. In one set of experiments promastigotes were already adapted to the medium by means of seria1 passages whereas in the second cells were grown in a biphasic medium and transfered to the liquid. Growth was more abundant for culture medium-adapted cells; degenerate cells in small numbers as well as d...
