We investigate the tunability of splay-aligned liquid crystals for the use in solid core photonic crystal fibers. Finite element simulations are used to obtain the alignment of the liquid crystals subject to an external electric field. By means of the liquid crystal director field the optical permittivity is calculated and used in finite element mode simulations. The suitability of liquid cryst...

Figure 1: A sketch of the L3 phase liquid crystal structure, derived from electron microscopy done on freeze fractured samples, as well as theoretical considerations. The pore diameters are uniform, but are randomly interconnected in all three dimensions resulting in short range order with long range disorder. The bilayer forming the liquid crystal can then be templated by a silica layer to cap...

We show that SiO x , deposited at 5° to the interior surface of a liquid crystal cell allows for a surprisingly substantial reduction in the ion concentration of liquid crystal devices. We have investigated this effect and found that this type of film, due to its surface morphology, captures ions from the liquid crystal material. Ion adsorption on 5° SiO x film obeys the Langmuir isotherm. Expe...

We investigate the electrical behavior of a symmetric liquid crystal (LC) cell: elecrode-silane-LC-silane-electrode. The silane (chlorodimethyloctadecyl-silane) layer induces a homeotropic orientation of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) molecules. The wettability technique is used to detect the change of the surface energy of the electrode upon cleaning and silane layer deposition. We report on...

In the second part of our paper, we address crystal nucleation in the metastable liquid miscibility region of eutectic systems that is always present, though experimentally often inaccessible. While this situation resembles the one seen in single component crystal nucleation in the presence of a metastable vapor-liquid critical point addressed in previous works, it is more complex because of th...

Charles Rosenblatt Department of Physics Case Western Reserve University Cleveland, Ohio 44106 USA Abstract Liquid crystal research falls under the broad category of “soft materials,” and is conducted at universities, government laboratories, and in industry around the world. The field has been particularly conducive to collaborative interactions, with many national and regional liquid crystal ...

The construction of liquid crystal compositions consisting of the dimeric liquid crystal, CB_C9_CB (cyanobiphenyl dimer = 1'',9''-bis(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-yl)nonane), and the range of nematic systems is explored. The materials include a laterally functionalized monomer, which was used to construct a phase diagram with CB_C9_CB, as well as one laterally linked dimer liquid crystal material and two...

Multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are normally grown as tangled masses by laser ablation or arc discharge. However, using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) techniques it is possible to grow dense aligned mats of “grass-like” MWCNTs as well as individual nanotubes in sparse arrays through the use of e-beam patterning of the catalyst. The fact that they exhibit very high conduct...

Recently, methine dyes have attracted interest for their possible application in display devices [1, 2 ] . A liquid crystal display based on the ability of "guest"' pleochroic dyes to align parallel to the "host" liquid crystal was first described by Heilmeier and Zanoni [3 ] . Since then the basic properties of "guest-host" type liquid crystal display devices and the effects of various paramet...
