The addition of lead salts to phosphate-containing Chlamydomonas reinhardtii media caused precipitation of Pb(3)(PO(4))(2), effectively removing phosphate from solution. The effect of Pb(2+) on growth of Chlamydomonas in liquid cultures depended strictly on the ratio of the equivalents of Pb(2+) to phosphate present. When the amount of Pb(2+) approached equivalency with phosphate, cell growth w...

Caenorhabditis elegans increasingly is attractive as a toxicity test organism, particularly as a model system to study mechanisms of toxicity at a molecular level and the way that these lead to whole organism and population level effects. Inhibitions of growth, reproduction, movement, and feeding rate all have been proposed as sublethal toxicity endpoints. These endpoints are more sensitive tha...

A 4-year-old black boy was admitted to the hospital with vomiting, low-grade fever, and dehydration that were thought to be caused by viral gastroenteritis. He proceeded over the next 12 hours to rapidly deteriorate with brain herniation leading to brain death. The ultimate cause of death was found to be acute lead intoxication from a swallowed foreign body.

A preliminary survey of an arsenic contaminated site from an abandoned copper smelting facility and feasibility study of using solidification/stabilization (S/S) process to treat the contaminant waste were undertaken. It was found that the waste, located in the three-flue gas discharge tunnels, contained 2-40% arsenic. The pH of the contaminated waste is extremely low (ranging from 1.8 to 3.6)....

Abstract Lead is a heavy metal that affects many organs such as nervous system, liver, and kidney. The most important affected organ is central nervous system. The present study reported a case similar to Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) due to lead exposure in an opium addicted person. Background: Opium is a new source of lead and considered as a cause of lead poisoning. As anemia and lead poisoning affect growth and behavior negatively, their timely prevention, diagnosis, and treatment are essential. The aim of thi study is evaluation of the prevalence of anemia, iron deficiency anemia, and lead poisoning in children with opioid toxicity. Materials and Methods: In this cr...

Abstract Background Elevated blood lead level (EBLL) is a public health problem in both developing and industrialized countries. Being petrochemical-based economy, (Pb) levels are expected to be high Kuwait, but systematic data on population exposure lacking. This study aimed at determining the prevalence of EBLL adolescents Kuwait. Methods Adolescents ( N = 1385; age range 11–16 years) were cr...
