AIM To determine whether Lactobacillus plantarum can modify the deleterious effects of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) on intestinal epithelial cells. METHODS Caco-2 cells were incubated with TNF-alpha alone or in the presence of L. plantarum. Transepithelial electrical resistance was used to measure epithelial barrier function. Interleukin 8 (IL-8) secretion by intestinal epithelial ...

Classical swine fever, caused by classical swine fever virus (CSFV), is a highly contagious disease that results in enormous economic losses in pig industries. The E2 protein is one of the main structural proteins of CSFV and is capable of inducing CSFV-neutralizing antibodies and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activities in vivo. Thymosin α-1 (Tα1), an immune-modifier peptide, plays a very impor...

Lactobacillus plantarum is a common inhabitant of mammalian gastrointestinal tracts, and L. plantarum strain WCFS1 is a human isolate with a known genome sequence. L. plantarum WCFS1 survives intestinal passage in an active form, and its transit time and transcriptional activities were monitored in 15 BALB/c mice at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 24 h after being fed a single intragastric dose of this organis...

Plasmids were visualized in strains of Lactobacillus plantarum by use of a rapid method. Plasmids pIP501 and pAM beta 1 were transferred by conjugation from Streptococcus strains to Lactobacillus plantarum, and recipient strains were shown to act as donors in crosses to S. lactis. Attempts to transfer these plasmids between strains of L. plantarum were not successful.

Serpa is an ovine raw milk cheese widely appreciated by the consumers. However, products may be seen with reservations in terms of safety or technological defects. To overcome that, addition autochthonous starter culture ensure cheesemaking process optimization and microbiota dominance. In this work, protective performance eleven lactic acid bacteria strains, isolated from Protected Designation...

Bile salts play an important role in the digestion of lipids in vertebrates and are synthesized and conjugated to either glycine or taurine in the liver. Following secretion of bile salts into the small intestine, intestinal microbes are capable of deconjugating the glycine or taurine from the bile salts, using an enzyme called bile salt hydrolase (Bsh). Intestinal lactobacilli are regarded as ...

Lactic acid bacteria have traditionally been thought to have immunomodulating effects. To verify this property, Lactobacillus plantarum was orally administered to mice (5 x 107 colony forming units (c.f.u.)), prior to infection with Listeria monocytogenes in order to evaluate the host resistance against an infectious micro-organism and to better define the influence of L. plantarum on such resp...

A total of 246 bacterial isolates were collected from various food and animal sources within Nanning city, China. Sequencing the 16S rRNA gene revealed that 24.4% lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Initial screens identified three semi-hard cheese: Lactobacillus plantarum subsp. strains K3 K4 Lb. paracasei tolerans K8; one raw buffalo milk: E41 as having highest levels cell surface hydrophobicity auto...

Obesity is strongly associated with several metabolic and chronic diseases and has become a major public health problem of worldwide concern. This study aimed to investigate the physiological characteristics and anti-obesity effects of Lactobacillus plantarum Q180. Lactobacillus plantarum Q180 was isolated from the faces of healthy adults and found to have a lipase inhibitory activity of 83.61±...
