In this Letter, we report the pioneering use of free electron laser radiation for the investigation of periodic crystalline structures. The diffraction properties of silver behenate single nanocrystals (5.8 nm periodicity) with the dimensions of 20 nm x 20 nm x 20 microm and as powder with grain sizes smaller than 200 nm were investigated with 8 nm free electron laser radiation in single-shot m...

Raman shifting of tunable ArF excimer laser radiation in a mixture of H(2) and D(2) produces tunable radiation in the 224-nm region as a result of Stokes shifting the frequency of the fundamental radiation (193 nm) once in both H(2) and D(2). At a total pressure of 25 bars, a 19% H(2) in D(2) mixture is found to provide a maximum conversion efficiency (2.5%) to the 224-nm range. Both fundamenta...

Next-generation high-power laser facilities (such as the Extreme Light Infrastructure) will provide unprecedented field intensities, and will allow us to probe qualitatively new physical regimes for the first time. One of the important fundamental questions which will be addressed is particle dynamics when radiation reaction and quantum effects play a significant role. Classical theories of rad...

We report on a diode-pumped Tm:KYW microchip laser generating 1 W continuous-wave output power. The laser operates at a wavelength of 1.94 μm in the fundamental TEM(00) mode with 71% slope efficiency relative to the absorbed pump radiation and 59% slope efficiency relative to the incident pump radiation. The optical-to-optical laser efficiency is 43%.

We demonstrate the hohlraum radiation temperature and symmetry required for ignition-scale inertial confinement fusion capsule implosions. Cryogenic gas-filled hohlraums with 2.2 mm-diameter capsules are heated with unprecedented laser energies of 1.2 MJ delivered by 192 ultraviolet laser beams on the National Ignition Facility. Laser backscatter measurements show that these hohlraums absorb 87...

Many spectroscopic studies require a source of coherent cw radiation tunable in the uv. Continuous wave radiation in the 257-360-nm range has been generated by sum frequency mixing, in potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) and its isomorphs, selected output lines from an argon or krypton ion laser with the output of a cw dye laser. Recent studies of mixing in potassium pentaborate (KB5) using pu...

Beams of x rays in the kiloelectronvolt energy range have been produced from laser-matter interaction. Here, energetic electrons are accelerated by a laser wakefield, and experience betatron oscillations in an ion channel formed in the wake of the intense femtosecond laser pulse. Experiments using a 50 TW laser (30 fs duration) are described, as well as comparisons with numerical simulations. T...

The cytotoxicity of 193 and 248 nm excimer laser radiation was compared to that produced by a germicidal lamp (predominantly 254 nm) using Chinese hamster ovary cells (CHO), and a human diploid fibroblast line, AG-1522A. Excimer laser radiation at 248 nm (3.5 X 10(2) w/m2) and germicidal radiation (5.3 X 10(-5) w/m2) caused toxicity in both cell lines, with the AG-1522A cells (D37 = 7-8 J/m2) b...

Tunable laser radiation with megahertz linewidth is generated with a simple, inexpensive, and compact laser system that uses two common microscope slides as the only intracavity tuning elements. The laser emits two radiation modes whose frequencies are separated by 1.2 GHz, corresponding to the free spectral range of the laser resonator. The frequencies may be rapidly varied over a range of 1.5...
