The formation of relativistic electron mirror produced via ioniza-tion of thin solid target by ultraintense femtosecond laser pulse is considered with the help of computer simulations. It is shown that the reflection of weak counter-propagating wave from such a mirror can produce the coherent radiation in x-ray and gamma-ray bands. The spectrum of up-conversed radiation is investigated.

A wavelength-swept thulium-doped fiber laser system employing two parallel cavities with two different fiber gain stages is reported. The fiber gain stages were tailored to provide emission in complementary bands with external wavelength-dependent feedback cavities sharing a common rotating polygon mirror for wavelength scanning. The wavelength-swept laser outputs from the fiber gain elements w...

A modified simple cavity design for the grazing incidence dye laser is presented. Diffraction losses are reduced by the addition of an intracavity lens and 100% reflecting spherical end mirror. The resulting concentric resonator design allows conversion efficiencies of 15% to be achieved. In addition, linewidth reductions of 25-40% over the conventional cavity are obtained, and the effects of t...

An exact analysis is presented of the steady-state stability of a semiconductor laser subjected to feedback from a phase-conjugate mirror. Reduced stability occurs at low feedback whenever the effective external delay time is an integer multiple of the relaxation oscillation period. The role of a finite response time of the mirror is to enhance drastically the steady-state stability.

We present detailed considerations on the achievable sensitivity in the measurement of birefringence using a high finesse optical cavity, emphasizing techniques based on frequency metrology. Alternative approaches of laser locking and cavity measurement techniques are discussed and demonstrated. High-precision measurements of the cavity mirror birefringence have led to the interesting observati...

Dispersible microscale mirror particles were synthesized by linkage of citrate-coated gold nanoparticles and 3-aminopropylsilyl-modified Ca2Nb3O10 perovskite nanoplates. The mirror particles reflect 14-19% of light in the 500-800 nm wavelength interval with retention of polarization. Due to their directional reflection properties, laser-irradiated micromirror dispersions in solvents exhibit Bro...

To measure various components with nano-scale precision, a new high-precision touch-trigger probe using a single low-cost sensor for a micro-coordinate measuring machine (CMM) is presented in this paper. The sensor is composed of a laser diode, a plane mirror, a focusing lens, and a quadrant photo detector (QPD). The laser beam from the laser diode with an incident angle is reflected by the pla...

Axial excitation confinement beyond the diffraction limit is crucial to the development of next-generation, super-resolution microscopy. STimulated Emission Depletion (STED) nanoscopy offers lateral super-resolution using a donut-beam depletion, but its axial resolution is still over 500 nm. Total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy is widely used for single-molecule localization, but i...

The influence of angular mirror-orientation errors on the length of a Fabry-Perot resonator is analyzed geometrically. Under conditions in which dominant errors are static or vary slowly over time, the analysis permits a simple prediction of the spectrum of short-term cavity length fluctuations resulting from mirror-orientation noise. The resulting model is applicable to the design of mirror co...

A practical scheme for the demonstration of perfect one-sided device-independent quantum secret sharing is proposed. The scheme involves a three-mode optomechanical system in which a pair of independent cavity modes is driven by short laser pulses and interact with a movable mirror. We demonstrate that by tuning the laser frequency to the blue (anti-Stokes) sideband of the average frequency of ...
