OBJECTIVE To compare the anatomical and visual outcomes of primary idiopathic macular hole surgery using indocyanine green-assisted internal limiting membrane peeling versus no internal limiting membrane peeling. DESIGN Prospective randomised controlled clinical trial. SETTING University teaching hospital, Hong Kong. PATIENTS Fifty-one eyes of 49 Chinese patients with primary idiopathic m...
Post-operative cardiac tamponade is a surgical enmergency. The outcome depends on early diagnosis. The clinical picture of tamponade due to inflammatory pericardial effusion has been described by Stewart, Crane, and Deitrick (1938), Besterman and Thomas (1953), and Burch and Phillips (1962). Rapid accumulation of fluid or clot in the pericardium, as in post-operative tamponade, produces its own...
Two cases of late cardiac tamponade after valve replacement surgery are reported: both patients were treated with oral anticoagulants (warfarin) after operation. An erratic response in the international normalised ratio (INR) was found before the diagnosis of late tamponade. It is suggested that this response of the INR may be an early indicator of late cardiac tamponade rather than a cause.
This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the influence of a temporary silicone oil (SiO) tamponade on intraocular pressure (IOP). We reviewed 131 procedures with a temporary SiO tamponade for different indications. Visual outcome and anatomic results after the SiO removal were also analyzed. Relatively good visual and anatomic results can be achieved by a temporary SiO tamponade with an accep...
The relationship of right atrial inversion, a previously undescribed cross-sectional echocardiographic sign, to the presence of cardiac tamponade was examined. We studied 127 patients with moderate or large pericardial effusions. Cardiac tamponade was present in 19 and absent in 104. Four patients with equivocal tamponade were excluded from analysis. Right atrial inversion was present in 19 of ...
INTRODUCTION Pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade can develop in patients with virtually any condition that affects the pericardium. A high index of suspicion with proper diagnostic scheme can lessen the concomitant morbidity and mortality. Although cardiac tamponade mimics many medical conditions, internists and primary care physicians should be aware of the physiological and clinical as...
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of balloon tamponade in the management of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH). Methods: Retrospective review of 58 women who underwent balloon tamponade for severe PPH, during a period of 5 years and 10 months, at Russells Hall Hospital, a busy district general hospital in UK. Clinical success was defined as control of bleeding without need for further intervent...
Pericardial effusion can develop from any pericardial disease, including pericarditis and several systemic disorders, such as malignancies, pulmonary tuberculosis, chronic renal failure, thyroid diseases, and autoimmune diseases. The causes of large pericardial effusion requiring invasive pericardiocentesis may vary according to the time, country, and hospital. Transthoracic echocardiography is...
Although leukaemic infiltration of the pericardium is frequently observed at post-mortem, clinically evident cardiac tamponade is rare. Two cases of cardiac tamponade complicating leukaemia are presented. One patient had cardiac tamponade as the initial presentation of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and experienced complete resolution of the pericardial effusion within 6 days after chemotherapy ...
