The resistance of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) to drugs is a major cause of antiretroviral treatment failure. We have compared direct sequencing to a line probe assay (LiPA) for the detection of drug resistance-related mutations in 197 clinical samples, and we have investigated the sequential appearance of mutations under drug pressure. For 26 patients with virological failure de...

BACKGROUND Semen represents a reservoir for human papillomavirus (HPV), rising concern in couples eligible for assisted reproduction techniques (ART). Humoral immunity against HPV is considered to protect from reinfection. We investigated the impact of vaccination on virus clearance in a cohort of infertile male patients showing HPV semen infection. METHODS 179 out of 619 infertile patients, ...

Two DNA strip assays, INNO-LiPA MYCOBACTERIA and GenoType Mykobakterien, were evaluated for identification of 81 Finnish mycobacterial isolates. The LiPA assay correctly identified 89.4% of the 66 isolates studied, and the GenoType assay identified 95.1% of 81 isolates. The GenoType assay had a wider selection of species and less stringent temperature requirements.

To evaluate the capacity of Versant HCV genotype assay (LiPA) 2.0 to identify hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotypes, 110 serum samples were collected from chronic hepatitis C patients. Three methods were compared: core sequence analysis, NS5B sequence analysis and the INNO-LiPA assay. The result showed that 102 (92.7%) of the samples were amplified in either or both regions, of which 97 were amplif...

conclusions genotype d was the main genotype detected in romanian patients with chronic hbv infection. genotype d presented both bcp and pc mutations more frequently. results we detected two hbv genotypes; a (8.1%) and d (60.5%), and a mixture of genotypes a and d (31.4%) (p < 0.001). basal core promoter (bcp) a1762t/g1764a and precore (pc) g1896a mutations were detected in these romanian patie...

AIMS We investigated the role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in the development of transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) arising in renal transplant recipients. METHODS Genomic DNA was extracted from 10 microm paraffin embedded sections of five TCCs arising in five renal transplant recipients using the QIAamp DNA mini kit according to the manufacturer's instructions. beta-globin PCR was performed ...

A group of 208 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected women in Brazil were studied for the presence of human papillomavirus with the general SPF(10) PCR primer set. Virtually all (98%) women were found positive for human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA. Genotyping by the reverse hybridization line probe assay (HPV-LiPA) revealed a high prevalence of multiple genotypes (78.9% of the cases), with a...

Two commercially available DNA line probe assays, Genotype MTBDR and INNO-LiPA Rif. TB, were evaluated for their abilities to detect resistance to isoniazid (INH) and rifampin (RIF) in 52 Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates. The test results were compared to those obtained by phenotypic drug susceptibility testing and sequencing. Compared to the results of phenotypic drug susceptibility testing...

In the last few years, a variety of DNA-based human leukocyte antigen (HLA) typing methods have emerged, revealing the extreme polymorphism of HLA genes. This polymorphism makes it difficult for a clinical laboratory to establish the best HLA typing strategy. In this study we have compared two techniques for performing HLA-DRB typing: a commercial rapid assay based on the polymerase chain react...
