Eighty children had cotton wool pledgets inserted under the nail corner for ingrowing toenails. Success was achieved in 44 (72%) of the 61 children followed up for a mean of 2.5 years. Appearance was excellent and compliance high. Initial insertion under anaesthesia improved the results, and chronicity did not adversely affect the outcome.

This procedure, first described in 1872, does not destroy the nail, which heals to give an excellent cosmetic result. The recurrence rate after 18 months was 20 per cent, which compares favourably with procedures in which...

There are currently many surgical options for treating the “ingrowing toenail” (for example, wedge resection, which is demonstrated in this month’s Video Series); however, they tend to have high rates of recurrence, poor cosmetic results, and low rates of patient satisfaction.1 According to a 2005 Cochrane Review, rates of regrowth after the long-standing treatment (phenolization) were 34% for ...

Twenty-three consecutive patients and 23 age-matched controls were assessed by caliper measurement and standard photographs, before a first operation for ingrowing toenail. We found no differences in shape between the toenails of the patie...
