In Powder Metallurgy the knowledge of the mechanisms governing the deformation behaviour of the material during its processing is in an initial stage due to the lack of an elasto-plastic model that could explain the mechanical behaviour, specially when the initial stage of powder die compaction is the one to be considered. For this reason geological models such as Cam-clay and Cap [1, 2, 3, 4] ...

Currently, visually described borehole samples are the primary input for large-scale 3D geological models of the subsurface, both when modelling architecture and composition. Cone penetration tests are rarely used and to a limited extent only. There are several reasons why it is of interest to utilize CPT data for geological and lithological modelling of the Dutch subsurface: 1) CPTs are more a...

Geological modelers commonly produce 3D Earth Model representations [2],[3],[6], which are not only used for 3D visualization but also for geophysics (Time2depth migration), reservoir characterization, drilling well path optimization and reservoir engineering. These models should be topologically consistent with respect to a definite interpretation of the geology. Faults and erosive surfaces mu...

Earth scientists acquire and interpret a variety of data in an attempt to define the best description of subsurface geological structures, or an earth model, as the data permit. The generation of numerical meshes derived from an earth model is a necessary critical step to provide specific data representations such as finite difference grids or finite element meshes, including the model geometry...

We propose a model for the folding of rock under the compression of tectonic plates. This models an elastic rock layer imbedded in a viscous foundation by a fourth-order parabolic equation with a nonlinear constraint. The large-time behaviour of solutions of this problem is examined and found to be of approximately self-similar form.

Due to an expected increase in geological voxel model data-flow and user demands, the development of improved quality control for such models is crucial. This study explores the potential of a new type of quality control that improves the detection of errors by just using gaze behavior of 12 geological experts. Gaze is used as input for an attention model that results in attended areas on slice...

Subsurface models are generally built from both subjective interpretation and mathematical interpolation/extrapolation techniques. These models are therefore uncertain, but their uncertainty is rarely expressed in a geological forecast. In this paper, an evaluation method of geological uncertainties related to 3-D subsurface models is proposed and tested on a real case. This method is based on ...

The experiences of developing engineering geological models in karst areas for designing and construction purposes prove the necessity of considering at least three basic submodels: sedimentological, structural-tectonic and the weathering one. The research presented here deals with very important and frequently neglected segments in each of the submodels. Therefore, particular attention should ...

Three-dimensional basin-wide simulation of generation, migration and accumulation of hydrocarbons has vast potential as an uncertainty and risk assessment tool in petroleum exploration. In order to fulfill this potential, several challenges have to be addressed including the modeling of the evolution of complex geological structures such as salt diapirs and fault motion. In this paper, we descr...

Geological uncertainty is of significant concern in petroleum reservoir modeling with the goal of maximizing oil production. Stochastic simulation allows generating multiple reservoir models that can be used to characterize this uncertainty. However, the large computation time needed for flow simulation (e.g., for use in production forecasting) impedes the evaluation of flow on all reservoir mo...
