In conditions of severe T cell depletion, such as HIV-1 infection, limited T cell production by the thymus can thwart the immune response, putting individuals at increased risk of infection with opportunistic pathogens. In this issue of the JCI, Napolitano et al. report, in a prospective, randomized study, that treatment of HIV-1-infected adults with growth hormone may reverse thymic atrophy, a...
Recurrent meningitis in children is unusual and usually associated with a predisposing factor like immune-deficiency disorder or cranio-spinal defect. We report a case of recurrent meningitis in association with Common Variable Immune deficiency.
Homeostatic proliferation of naive T cells transferred to T cell-deficient syngeneic mice is driven by low-affinity self-MHC/peptide ligands and the cytokine IL-7. In addition to homeostatic proliferation, a subset of naive T cells undergoes massive proliferation in chronically immunodeficient hosts, but not in irradiated normal hosts. Such rapid T cell proliferation occurs largely independent ...
A manufactured blood product derived from fractionated human plasma, intravenous immunoglobulin (i.v.Ig) contains supra-physiologic levels of IgG. i.v.Ig is currently used in the treatment of immunodeficiency syndromes, inflammatory disorders and infections diseases. Uncontrolled clinical studies and anecdotal case reports recommend its use in dermatology, but randomized clinical trials are lac...

World AIDS Day draws attention to the current status of the human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) epidemic worldwide. The theme for this year's December 1 observance is "Shared Responsibility: Strengthening Results for an AIDS-Free Generation."
Isolates of Mycobacterium avium complex from 727 patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) were submitted by medical centers across the United States to the Centers for Disease Control for serotyping. We were able to type 630 (87%) of these isolates by our seroagglutination procedure. Almost all typeable isolates were M. avium (serotypes 1 to 6 and 8 to 11). Blood was the major sp...
Cardiac involvement is common in patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and, when symptomatic, it portends a poor prognosis. We present a case of marked spontaneous regression of cardiomyopathy in a patient with AIDS. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of spontaneous recovery of ventricular function in an AIDS patient.
