A patient who was normocalcaemic before donation of a kidney to her son developed hypercalcaemia in the immediate postoperative period, which was subsequently found to be due to a parathyroid adenoma. It is assumed that the hypercalcaemia was unmasked by the reduction in glomerular filtration rate following the nephrectomy.
The case is reported of a woman who recovered from acute glomerulonephritis with oliguria of 43 days duration and who subsequently developed hypercalcaemia, treated by parathyroidectomy. The evidence is presented that the acute nephritis developed in the presence of a primary parathyroid adenoma, providing the natural experiment of hypercalcaemia temporarily depressed by acute renal failure.
The response to the bisphosphonate, pamidronate, is reported in a child with osteogenesis imperfecta who had recurrent symptomatic hypercalcaemia after immobilisation following fractures. Oral clodronate was effective in the prevention of immobilisation hypercalcaemia in the same child. The bisphosphonates may have other roles in osteogenesis imperfecta by decreasing bone turnover.
This is a case report of a 67 year old man who presented with a fluctuating level of consciousness and myoclonic jerks caused in part by hypercalcaemia. The diagnosis of cerebral neoplastic angioendotheleosis was only made later on brain biopsy and is the first report of the occurrence of hypercalcaemia in neoplastic angioendotheleosis.
A man with Paget's disease of bone was admitted with a fractured neck of femur. On admission he was normocalcaemic, but with immobilization he rapidly became hypercalcaemic, despite a normal diet and no medication. The hypercalcaemia responded to calcitonin. Although hypercalcaemia is often quoted as complicating the immobilization of such patients, well documented uncomplicated cases have rare...
