The deuterium-hydrogen abundance ratio in the Venus atmosphere was measured while the inlets to the Pioneer Venus large probe mass spectrometer were coated with sulfuric acid from Venus' clouds. The ratio is (1.6 +/- 0.2) x 10(-2). The hundredfold enrichment of deuterium means that at least 0.3 percent of a terrestrial ocean was outgassed on Venus, but is consistent with a much greater production.

histone deacetylase inhibitors have gained a great deal of attention recently for the treatment of cancers and inflammatory diseases. so design of new inhibitors is of great importance in pharmaceutical industries and labs. creating pharmacophor models in order to design new molecules or search a library for finding lead compounds is of great interest. this approach reduces the overall cost ass...

We present a novel and simple enrichment strategy to capture trabecular meshwork (TM) protease proteome. The method relies on fractionation of TM tissue into cytosolic and nuclear extracts and subsequent affinity enrichment of proteases on peptide inhibitors. A large repertoire of available protease substrate analog peptides enables an improved capture of TM protease proteome compared to SDS-PA...

In a previous study of the fermentation of lactate by Clostridium lacto-acetophilum (Bhat and Barker, 1947) it was shown that pure cultures of this organism can decompose lactate only when acetate is provided as a second substrate, whereas enrichment cultures of the same organism do not require added acetate. This difference in nutritional requirements indicated a corresponding difference in th...

—Stable-isotope analysis of feathers is an increasingly important source of information on diet and movement of birds. Feathers are typically cleaned with a solvent before analysis, but the effects of this cleaning on the resulting data have not been examined critically. We conducted an experiment to determine whether a cleaning regime affected hydrogen ( D), carbon ( C), and nitrogen ( N) ...

In the present study, two granular systems were compared in terms of hydrogen production rate, stability and bacterial diversity under extreme thermophilic conditions (70 degrees C). Two EGSB reactors were individually inoculated with heat treated methanogenic granules (HTG) and HTG amended with enrichment culture with high capacity of hydrogen production (engineered heat treated methanogenic g...

Anaerobic bacteria involved in the degradation of long-chain fatty acids (LCFA), in the presence of sulfate as electron acceptor, were studied by combined cultivation-dependent and molecular techniques. The bacterial diversity in four mesophilic sulfate-reducing enrichment cultures, growing on oleate (C(18:1), unsaturated LCFA) or palmitate (C(16:0), saturated LCFA), was studied by denaturing g...
