Background & Objectives: Herpes viruses can cause diseases in the clinical range. The virus can cause infection in various body parts, especially eyes and nervous system. The aim of this study was at evaluating  the Real-Time TaqMan probe PCR in diagnosing and monitoring of the patients with suspected HSV infections.Materials & Methods: More than a thousand patients with suspected HSV infection...

The complete nucleotide sequence of the gene encoding the protease and ICP35 capsid protein of herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 2 strain G has been determined. The gene consisits of a 1908 bp open reading frame capable of encoding 636 amino acids. Comparative nucleotide sequence analysis of the gene with published HSV-1 sequences revealed that the HSV-2 nucleic acid segment most likely encodes t...

Herpes simplex virus-type 1 is among the most prevalent and successful humans pathogens. Although infection is largely uncomplicated in the immunocompetent human host, HSV-1 infection can cause blinding corneal disease, and individuals with defects in innate or adaptive immunity are susceptible to herpes simplex encephalitis. Chemokines regulate leukocyte trafficking to inflamed tissues and pla...

The susceptibilities of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) and herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2) to 17 nucleoside analogs were compared by a plaque reduction assay with human embryonic lung fibroblast cells. The susceptibility of VZV to certain nucleoside analogs was different from that of HSV-1. Against VZV the 5-halogenovinyl-arabinosyluracils were the most potent of the compou...

BACKGROUND A herpes simplex virus (HSV)-2 candidate vaccine consisting of glycoprotein D (gD2) in alum and monophosphoryl lipid A (MPL) reduced genital herpes disease in HSV-1-seronegative women but not in men or HSV-1-seropositive women. METHODS To determine the effect of HSV-1 serostatus on effectiveness of different vaccines, we tested gD2 in alum/MPL, gD2 in Freund's adjuvant, and dl5-29 ...

Apolipoprotein E (ApoE), a constituent of the lipoproteins, may be relevant in herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection of the central nervous system (CNS), since HSV-1 binds to human serum ApoE lipoproteins. This study demonstrates the involvement of ApoE in the hematogenous route of HSV-1 to the CNS.

The Herpes simplex viruses are responsible for a broad-spectrum of diseases affecting all age groups across the developed and developing world. The viruses are members of the herpesvirus family, which also includes the human pathogens Varicella-Zoster virus, Epstein-Barr virus, Cytomegalovirus, Human herpes virus -6 and -8. Herpes simplex virus type -1 (HSV-1) and -2 (HSV-2) are serotypically d...

We have investigated whether herpes simplex virus (HSV) contains structural polypeptides which are modified by myristic acid. We demonstrate that herpes simplex virions contain a family of myristylated proteins, Mr approximately 13,000 to 16,000. These were mapped, using HSV-1/HSV-2 intertypic recombinants, to 0.130 to 0.204 map units on the virus genome. Using anti-peptide sera, raised against...

A replication-defective mutant of herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) was engineered by replacing the ICP8 gene of HSV-2 strain 186 with an ICP8-lacZ fusion gene from the herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) HD-2 mutant strain. The resulting virus, HSV-2 5BlacZ, is defective for growth in Vero cells but is capable of growth in a cell line that expresses HSV-1 ICP8. In Vero cells, the mutant virus is defec...

HEp-2 cells underwent apoptosis when the cells were incubated in medium containing sorbitol. Infection with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) prior to the sorbitol treatment suppressed this apoptosis completely, indicating that HSV-1 carries an antiapoptosis gene. In addition, HSV-1 multiplication was restricted in these apoptotic HEp-2 cells.
