In several families of scale insects (coccids), the sex of an embryo is determined by the number of genetically active genomes present (one = males, two = females). In mealybugs (Pseudococcidae), both males and females develop from fertilized eggs but, in the embryos that develop into males, the set of chromosomes (genome) of paternal origin (PG) becomes heterochromatic (H) and genetically inac...

Background: White spot syndrome virus (wssv) is the causing agent for white spot disease in shrimp and many crustaceans. This disease is highly contagious and can cause death within 3–10 days under normal culture conditions. Therefore, early diagnosis of the virus is a necessity. Materials and Methods: Primers were designed for three regions of the virus genome and one region of the shrimp geno...

Extremophilic organisms demonstrate the flexibility and adaptability of basic biological processes by highlighting how cell physiology adapts to environmental extremes. Few eukaryotic extremophiles have been well studied and only a small number are amenable to laboratory cultivation and manipulation. A detailed characterization of the genome architecture of such organisms is important to illumi...

The performance of the GeneScan algorithm for gene identification has been improved by incorporation of a directed iterative scanning procedure. Application is made here to the cases of bacterial and organnellar genomes. The sensitivity of gene identification was 100% in Plasmodium falciparum plastid-like genome (35 kb) and in 98% in the Mycoplasma genitalium genome (approximately 580 kb) and t...

BACKGROUND Elymus (Poaceae) is a large genus of polyploid species in the wheat tribe Triticeae. It is polyphyletic, exhibiting many distinct allopolyploid genome combinations, and its history might be further complicated by introgression and lineage sorting. We focus on a subset of Elymus species with a tetraploid genome complement derived from Pseudoroegneria (genome St) and Hordeum (H). We co...

Streptomyces sp. H-KF8 is a fjord-derived marine actinobacterium capable of producing antimicrobial activity. Streptomyces sp. H-KF8 was isolated from sediments of the Comau fjord, located in the northern Chilean Patagonia. Here, we report the 7.7-Mb genome assembly, which represents the first genome of a Chilean marine actinobacterium.

We report here the complete genome sequence of a metronidazole-resistant Helicobacter pylori strain (MET(r)). The MET(r) strain was obtained under exposure of H. pylori 26695 on agar plates with low metronidazole concentrations. The genome data provide insight into the genomic changes of H. pylori under selection by metronidazole in vitro.

We present the complete genome sequence of Helicobacter pylori strain Hp238, isolated from a Taiwanese patient with gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. Importantly, H. pylori strain Hp238 can multiply in THP-1 cells after internalization through the induction of autophagosome formation. These genome data will help to identify genes associated with H. pylori intracellular multipl...

Holospora undulata is a micronucleus-specific symbiont of the ciliate Paramecium caudatum. We report here the draft genome sequence of H. undulata strain HU1. This genome information will contribute to the study of symbiosis between H. undulata and the host P. caudatum.

Here we present the complete genome sequences of two Helicobacter pylori rifampin-resistant (Rif(r)) strains (Rif1 and Rif2). Rif(r) strains were obtained by in vitro selection of H. pylori 26695 on agar plates with 20 µg/ml rifampin. The genome data provide insights on the genomic diversity of H. pylori under selection by rifampin.
