We present an abstract version of Goerss-Hopkins theory in the setting a prestable ?-category equipped with suitable periodicity operator. In case synthetic spectra, this yields obstructions to realizing comodule algebra as homology commutative ring spectrum, recovering results Goerss and Hopkins.

We introduce the concept of cotensor coalgebra for a given bicomodule over a coalgebra in an abelian monoidal category. Under some further conditions we show that such a cotensor coalgebra exists and satisfies a meaningful universal property. We prove that this coalgebra is formally smooth whenever the comodule is relative injective and the coalgebra itself is formally smooth.

We construct the algebraic stack of formal groups and use it to provide a new perspective onto a recent result of M. Hovey and N. Strickland on comodule categories for Landweber exact algebras. This leads to a geometric understanding of their results as well as to a generalisation.
