This paper provides an insight into the usability of our Universal Interaction Controller (UIC), a user interface device designed to support interactions in ubiquitous computing environments equipped with multiple heterogeneous displays. The results are presented of a user study we undertook to test the intuitiveness of Ukey, our UIC input device, comparing it to a wireless gyroscopic mouse, as...
Physicists and engineers are making technical progress toward the creation of intercontinental quantum networks. But if they succeed, what new applications will a quantum Internet enable? This paper presents a series of potential uses, some fairly well-established and some highly speculative. The entanglement generated by a quantum network will be useful both as a digital computational resource...
We consider a shape optimization problem in rotordynamics where the mass of a rotor is minimized subject to constraints on the natural frequencies. Our analyis is based on a class of rotors described by a Rayleigh beam model including effects of rotary inertia and gyroscopic moments. The solution of the equation of motion leads to a generalized eigenvalue problem. The governing operators are no...
The paper presents the theoretical basis for modal analysis of a general nonconservative system. The modal analysis uses only real modes in terms of the displacements as well as velocity coordinates and converts the system to a real, uncoupled, second-order form. This is the first time that such a transformation has been presented in the literature. Earlier works presented modal analysis in the...
The dynamic response of an axially translating continuum subjected to the combined effects of a pair of spring supported frictional guides and axial acceleration is investigated; such systems are both non-conservative and gyroscopic. The continuum is modeled as a tensioned string translating between two rigid supports with a time dependent velocity profile. The equations of motion are derived w...
The nonlinear system of equations of relativistic Lorentz electrodynamics (LED) is studied in a “gyroscopic setup” in which the Lorentz electron is assumed to remain at rest, leaving the electromagnetic fields and the particle spin as the only dynamical degrees of freedom. The global existence and uniqueness of this gyroscopic spin-plus-field dynamics in unbounded space is proven. It is further...
In this paper, the feasibility of a Control Moment Gyroscope (CMG) as balance assistance device is investigated. An inverted pendulum is used as experimental set-up. Our initial results show that it is possible to maintain balance within a 4 degrees range from vertical.
