Abstract Comparing fitness of herbicide-resistant and herbicide-susceptible weed biotypes is important for managing herbicide resistance. Previous research suggests there little to no penalty from amplification the 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase ( EPSPS ) gene (a mechanism glyphosate resistance) in Palmer amaranth Amaranthus palmeri S. Watson) controlled studies greenhouse or growt...
The genus Gossypium has a long history of taxonomic and evolutionary study. Much of this attention has been stimulated by the fact that the genus includes four domesticated species, the New World allopolyploids G. hirsutum and G. barbadense (2n = 52), and the Old World diploids G. arboreum and G. herbaceum (2n = 26). These cultivated species embody considerable genetic diversity, but this diver...
The two most economically important plant-parasitic nematodes infesting cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) in the United States are the root-knot (Meloidogyne incognita) and the reniform (Rotylenchulus reniformis) nematode. The common means of managing these pests is use of in-furrow or seed-treatment nematicides, or by rotation with non-host crops or resistant cultivars of crops grown in rotation. Un...
We tested, in an olfactometer, whether or not Tribolium castaneumHerbst (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) responds preferentially to the volatiles that emanate from the fungi associated with cotton [Gossypium hirsutum L. (Malvaceae)] seed over those that emanate from cereals, because cereals are usually portrayed as the primary resources of these beetles. Pairwise comparisons were conducted between c...
Glanded (Gd) cottonseed (Gossypium hirsutum L.) contains scattered gossypol glands. Glandless (Gl) is a new type of seed containing only trace levels gossypol. This work quantitatively compared the content and migration pattern Gd Gl protein isolates. Both samples were subjected to sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-gel electrophoresis, gel bands separated into seven partitions for peptide mass spect...
The cotton (Gossypium spp.) fiber is a unique elongated cell that is useful for investigating cell differentiation. Previous studies have demonstrated the importance of factors such as sugar metabolism, the cytoskeleton, and hormones, which are commonly known to be involved in plant cell development, while the secondary metabolites have been less regarded. By mining public data and comparing an...
Malate dehydrogenases (MDHs) play crucial roles in the physiological processes of plant growth and development. In this study, 13 and 25 MDH genes were identified from Gossypium raimondii and Gossypium hirsutum, respectively. Using these and 13 previously reported Gossypium arboretum MDH genes, a comparative molecular analysis between identified MDH genes from G. raimondii, G. hirsutum, and G. ...
Cotton fiber is multigenic trait controlled by number of genes. Previous studies suggest that one of these genes may be responsible for switching cotton fiber growth on and off to influence the fiber quality produced from a cotton seed. In the present study, the Gossypium hirsutum GhEXPA8 fiber expansin gene was introduced into local cotton variety NIAB 846 by using an Agrobacterium-mediated ge...
Alternate-1 and alternate-2 orientation of chromosomes, as well as the two types of adjacent orientation, were observed cytologically in the ring configurations of three reciprocal translocation heterozygotes of Gossypium hirsutum L. The observations indicate that the two types of alternate orientation should be characteristic of ring-forming translocations.
