The normal development of the genital organs of mammals, including humans, is under hormonal control. A role for the female sex hormone estrogen in this process is still unclear. However, exposure of experimental animals or humans to the potent exogenous estrogen, diethylstilbestrol (DES), results in persistent differentiation effects. Since many chemicals in the environment are weakly estrogen...

Migraine is considered to be a multifactorial disorder in which genetic, environmental, and, in the case of menstrual and menstrually related migraine, hormonal events influence the phenotype. Certainly, the role of female sex hormones in migraine has been well established, yet the mechanism behind this well-known relationship remains unclear. This review focuses on the potential role of hormon...

Cross-sectional age- and sex-specific plasma lipid distributions (means, medians and selected percentiles) are given for 48,431 white participants in visit 1 of the Lipid Research Clinics (LRC) Prevalence Study. This study consisted of two visits in which 10 LRCs screened participants selected from well-defined North American target populations that included a broad range of sociodemographic su...

Over the past 40 years, gonadal sex differentiation in teleost fish has been studied from histological and physiological viewpoints, for its application in fisheries. The morphological characteristics of gonadal sex differentiation in teleost fish were discussed in Section 2, and a summary of sexual processes, such as gonadal sex differentiation and sexual maturation in triploid salmonid fishes...

To determine the effects of Ramadan fasting on the secretion of sex hormones in single healthy males, we measured blood hormone levels of testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in 52 single male students aged 18-24 years who were fasting for > or = 12 hours during Ramadan. Four blood samples were taken from each, one 2 days before and the others on 10, 20 ...

Females in estrus showed maximum olfactory sensitivity as judged by their ability in locating the buried bait. The results suggest that olfactory sensitivity in females varies during the stages of the estrous cycle. The findings further indicate that gonadal steroids play an important role in the expression of olfactory sensitivity in females.

Mice produce litters containing many pups, and the female fetuses that develop between male fetuses have significantly higher concentrations of the male sex steroid testosterone in both their blood and amniotic fluid than do females that develop between other female fetuses. These two types of females differ during later life in many sexually related characteristics. Thus, individual variation ...

Throughout evolution, gamete generation and sex hormone production are the two processes combined in the testis. The local proximity of sex steroid-producing cells and spermatogenic cells allows multiple cellular interactions to occur and thereby facilitates the modulation and/or synchronisation of both testicular functions. This mini review provides an introduction to the vast variety of diffe...

Salt preference was assessed in 60 adults of 18-21 yrs of age (30 males and 30 females) and in 60 children of 7-12 yrs of age (30 boys and 30 girls). Subjects rated the preference on Likert scale for popcorns of five salt concentrations (OM, 1M, 2M, 3M and +3M). Statistical analysis using Two way ANOVA revealed statistically significant effect of age and sex on salt preference (F4,100 = 15.027,...
