Real-time intensive signal processing applications have been traditionally deployed on various custom platforms. Meanwhile, the enterprise computing market had spurred the advent of inexpensive and powerful systems based on widely available processors. Today, SMP systems associating a potentially large number of recent processors are deemed to cope with the needs of the most demanding real-time...

Malloc(3) is considered to be a robust building block. However, we found that many malloc implementations su er from excessive heap fragmentation when used with Hummingbird, a long-running application which stores a large number of xed-sized and variable-sized objects in dynamic memory. This paper characterizes the dynamic memory activity pattern of Hummingbird and GNU Emacs. It compares the be...

GNU Prolog is a general-purpose implementation of the Prolog language, which distinguishes itself from most other systems by being, above all else, a native-code compiler which produces standalone executables which don’t rely on any byte-code emulator or meta-interpreter. Other aspects which stand out include the explicit organization of the Prolog system as a multipass compiler, where intermed...

In this paper we describe the design and the implementation of the GNU Prolog system. This system draws on our previous experience of compiling Prolog to C in the wamcc system and of compiling finite domain constraints in the clp(FD) system. The compilation scheme has however been redesigned in order to overcome the drawbacks of compiling to C. In particular, GNU-Prolog is based on a low-level ...
