We present a case of a 40-year-old soldier who was in close proximity to the detonation of an improvised explosive device (IED). Bubbles of gas were visible within the anterior chamber of his left eye. The authors propose that intraocular gas, present acutely after trauma, is diagnostic of open globe injury and is of particular importance in remote military environments.
BACKGROUND The objective of this study was to evaluate risk factors associated with eyeball loss and ambulatory vision loss on emergent examination of patients with ocular trauma. METHODS We reviewed the medical records of 1,875 patients hospitalized in a single tertiary referral center between January 2003 and December 2007. Emergent examinations included a history of trauma, elapsed time be...
AIM To evaluate the epidemiologic, anatomic, and clinical features of open globe injuries in children. METHODS The medical files of patients under the age of 16 who had been operated for an open globe injury at Akdeniz University Hospital's Department of Ophthalmology were retrospectively evaluated. RESULTS A total of 90 patients were evaluated in this study. Among these patients, 26 (28.9%...
Akin to two people not speaking a common language (Fig. 1.1.1), ophthalmologists are unable to unambiguously communicate with each other if the terms they use to describe an eye injury are not standardized. If the terms used do not have straightforward definitions, practitioners cannot understand each other when discussing an ocular trauma case, nor can research be conducted, and its results pu...
The authors present a rare case of large chorioretinal rupture caused by blunt traumatic injury of the globe. A 22-year-old woman sustained a blunt injury to her left eye. The best-corrected Snellen visual acuity was 2/20 in her left eye, and hyphema and vitreous hemorrhage were noted. The day after the injury occurred the vitreous hemorrhage had disappeared. Fundus examination revealed a cresc...
PURPOSE Ballistic impact studies and supercomputer modeling were performed to elicit the mechanisms of optic nerve rupture that may accompany blunt ocular trauma. METHODS Paintball ocular impact responses were studied with abattoir-fresh porcine eyes. Physics-based numerical code CTH was used to produce robust geometric and constitutive models of the eye and orbit, providing a comparative 3-D...
Gaur N, et al. BMJ Case Rep 2017. doi:10.1136/bcr-2017-221248 Description A 14-year-old man presented to the emergency services following trauma to his left eye (LE) sustained during a battery explosion. The patient was conscious, and oriented in time, space and person, and higher mental functions were preserved. The patient had visual acuity of light perception in his left eye. Head of a metal...
