Selective acylation of alcohol has enjoyed great attraction of chemists due to its significance in synthetic organic chemistry especially in protecting group chemistry as reflected by the number of methods that have been developed to effect this transformation. To meet the challenging task of chemoselective transformation of aliphatic alcohols in the presence of phenolic alcohol mainly acidic c...

Commercially available silica gel is chemically modified for carbon dioxide capture. Calcinated silica gel of certain particle size functionalized with amine using two different methods, wet impregnation and grafting via silane chemistry has been employed as a porous media. The prepared material is characterized by Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive anal...

The Reference Institute of Bioanalysis of the German Society of Clinical Chemistry has performed the first external assessment of molecular genetics methods used in medical diagnosis. The following procedures were tested: (I) DNA preparation from whole blood, (II) PCR amplification using "standard" primers, and (III) submarine agarose gel electrophoresis. Out of 50 participants, 45 returned sam...

This work demonstrates the ability of sol-gel derived materials to support the differentiation of neuronal cells, and investigates the physiochemical interactions between the surface and extracellular matrix proteins as a mediator of the effects of surface features on differentiation. We have applied fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) spectroscopy to study the conformational changes ...

A new fluorescence-based detection method was developed to visualize zidovudine-incorporated DNA using click chemistry. This bio-orthogonal detection method was used to quantify the relative susceptibility of various DNA-synthesizing enzymes toward ZDV incorporation on the basis of ratiometric analysis of band shifts in the gel and the visual observation of cellular DNA.

Combining sol-gel chemistry with polymer templating strategies enables production of CuFe(2)O(4) thin films with both an ordered cubic network of 17 nm diameter pores and tunable spinel domain sizes. These nanocrystalline materials contain only minor structural defects with λ = 0.85 ± 0.02 and exhibit multiple functionalities, including superparamagnetic behavior (T(B)≈ 310 K) and redox- and ph...

Photoinitiated silane-ene chemistry has the potential to pave the way toward spatially resolved organosilicon compounds, which might find application in biomedicine, microelectronics, and other advanced fields. Moreover, this approach could serve as a viable alternative to the popular photoinitiated thiol-ene chemistry, which gives access to defined and functional photopolymer networks. A difun...

Hydrogel tubes of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-methyl methacrylate) (p(HEMA-co-MMA)) made by liquid-liquid centrifugal casting are being investigated as potential nerve guidance channels in the central nervous system. An important criterion for the nerve guidance channel is that its mechanical properties are similar to those of the spinal cord, where it will be implanted. The formulated ...

The outer liquid of a two-liquid coaxial electrified jet is gelled before the onset of natural instabilities to yield hollow nanofibers. By using sol-gel chemistry, innocuous solvents such as glycerol and olive oil, and electrohydrodynamics, it is possible to make such structures in a rather straightforward manner.
