As is well-known from the literature on oligopolistic competition with incomplete information, firms have incentives to share private value demand information. However, by assuming verifiability of demand data, these models ignore the possibility of strategic misinformation. We show that if firms can send misleading demand information, they will always do so. Furthermore, we derive a costly sig...

We present a new methodology for analysing forensic identification problems involving DNA mixture traces where several individuals may have contributed to the trace. The model used for identification and separation of DNA mixtures is based on a gamma distribution for peak area values. In this paper we illustrate the gamma model and apply it on several real examples from forensic casework.

The pore radius distribution in paper is known to be influenced by changes in the mean grammage and formation. Experimental data are presented that confirm the established result that the standard deviation of pore radii is proportional to the mean. The data show also that this proportionality is the same for changes in grammage and formation and that, contrary to results reported in the litera...

We present a model for the local diffusion-relaxation dynamics of the C(α)-atoms in proteins describing both the diffusive short-time dynamics and the asymptotic long-time relaxation of the position autocorrelation functions. The relaxation rate spectra of the latter are represented by shifted gamma distributions, where the standard gamma distribution describes anomalous slow relaxation in macr...

Maximum likelihood estimation of phylogenetic trees from nucleotide sequences is completely consistent when nucleotide substitution is governed by the general time reversible (GTR) model with rates that vary over sites according to the invariable sites plus gamma (I + gamma) distribution.

We simulated single-generation data for a fitness trait in mutation-accumulation (MA) experiments, and we compared three methods of analysis. Bateman-Mukai (BM) and maximum likelihood (ML) need information on both the MA lines and control lines, while minimum distance (MD) can be applied with or without the control. Both MD and ML assume gamma-distributed mutational effects. ML estimates of the...

The consistency of the species abundance distribution across diverse communities has attracted widespread attention. In this paper, I argue that the consistency of pattern arises because diverse ecological mechanisms share a common symmetry with regard to measurement scale. By symmetry, I mean that different ecological processes preserve the same measure of information and lose all other inform...

Distance-based approaches in phylogenetics such as Neighbor-Joining are a fast and popular approach for building trees. These methods take pairs of sequences, and from them construct a value that, in expectation, is additive under a stochastic model of site substitution. Most models assume a distribution of rates across sites, often based on a gamma distribution. Provided the (shape) parameter ...

Models of human mortality include a factor that summarises intrinsic differences in individual rates of ageing, commonly called frailty. Frailty also describes a clinical syndrome of apparent vulnerability. In a representative, cross-sectional, Canadian survey (n = 66,589) we calculated a frailty index as the mean accumulation of deficits and previously showed it to increase exponentially with ...

In this paper, we consider admissible estimation of the parameter ?r in the gamma distribution with truncated parameter space under entropy loss function. We obtain the classes of admissible estimators. The result can be applied to estimation of parameters in the normal, lognormal, pareto, generalized gamma, generalized Laplace and other distributions.
