The two main approaches for the description of sound fields are methods derived from solutions of the wave equation and geometric methods based on analogies to ray optics. Their mathematical representations are reviewed and it is shown that representations by projective geometry and descriptions by Fourier acoustics lead to similar parametric representations of sound fields.

The design of Agilent Cary 600 FTIR Series spectrometers focuses on performance. This is achieved through innovative optics design, with an emphasis on optical throughput. The result is an FTIR series that offers unrivalled sensitivity and performance. A larger footprint is required, but this is a negligible compromise for the customer, given the vast increase in productivity and profitability ...

In recent years there has been a renewed interest in finding fast algorithms to compute accurately the linear canonical transform (LCT) of a given function. This is driven by the large number of applications of the LCT in optics and signal processing. The well-known integral transforms: Fourier, fractional Fourier, bilateral Laplace and Fresnel transforms are special cases of the LCT. In this p...

In this survey paper we introduce the reader to the notion of the fractional Fourier transform, which may be considered as a fractional power of the classical Fourier transform. It has been intensely studied during the last decade, an attention it may have partially gained because of the vivid interest in timefrequency analysis methods of signal processing, like wavelets. Like the complex expon...

It is well known that the geometrical optics approximation, generally valid for high-frequency fields, fails in the vicinity of a caustic. A systematic procedure of V. P. Maslov that remedies this situation will be reviewed in this paper. Maslov's method makes use of a representation of the geometrical optics field in the phase space M = X x K, where a point m = (x, •c) is a pair of a position ...

Current methods for generating Bessel beams are limited to fixed beam sizes or, in the case of conventional adaptive optics, relatively long switching times between beam shapes. We analyze the multiscale Bessel beams created using an alternative rapidly switchable device: a tunable acoustic gradient index (TAG) lens. The shape of the beams and their nondiffracting, self-healing characteristics ...

The development of modeling algorithms for adaptive optics systems is important for evaluating both performance and design parameters prior to system construction. Two of the most critical subsystems to be modeled are the binary optic design and the adaptive control system. Since these two are intimately related, it is beneficial to model them simultaneously. Optic modeling techniques have some...
