The phase transition under pressure in iodine is analyzed using the electron localization function (ELF), explaining that the increase of the c/a ratio under compression is due to the presence of the lone pairs. A probabilistic interpretation is given for ELF. q 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We use the nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory formalism to compute equilibrium and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) signal of a strongly interacting fermionic lattice model with coupling dispersionless phonons total charge on given site. In atomic limit, this produces phonon subbands in spectral function, but not RIXS signal. Electron hopping processes however result phonon-re...

The electrical resistivity of Co/Ni and Cu/Ni superlattices exhibit resistivity oscillations as a function of superlattice period L, while Ag/Pd does not. Moreover, the resistivity of Co/Ni superlattices shows quantum size effects and a resistivity enhancement with L, as a function of total film thickness d . These results are consistent with a model which assumes d-electron localization in the...

Regions of space are defined to maximize the probability to find a given number of electrons within. Their chemical significance and their relationship to the electron localization function (ELF) are explored by analyzing the results for a few linear molecules: LiH, BH, N2, CO, CS, C2H2, and C4H2.

We explore the possibility of using a double-tip STM to probe the single electron Green function of a sample surface, and describe a few important applications: (1) Probing constant energy surfaces in k-space by ballistic transport; (2) Measuring scattering phase shifts of defects; (3) Observing the transition from ballistic to diffusive transport to localization; and (4) Measuring inelastic me...

We investigate the dissociation of few-electron circular vertical semiconductor double quantum dot artificial molecules at 0 T as a function of interdot distance. A slight mismatch introduced in the fabrication of the artificial molecules from nominally identical constituent quantum wells induces localization by offsetting the energy levels in the quantum dots by up to 2 meV, and this plays a c...

Transition metals function as cofactors in specific proteins, catalyzing electron exchange reactions, binding substrates and stabilizing protein structure. Studies of human diseases and of model organisms have defined many of the molecular details of metal uptake, trafficking, and excretion. The current challenge is to integrate these details into a systematic view of metal content, speciation,...

We point out a close physical and formal similarity between the problems of electron tunneling in the effective environment and the weak localization effects in the presence of interactions. In both cases the results are expressed in terms of the " energy probability distribution function " P (E) which has a finite width even at T = 0 due to interactions.

endoplasmic reticulum has a critical role in the synthesis and folding of secretory and membrane proteins. high accumulation of proteins in er activates the unfolded protein response and glucose regulated protein 78 or gpr78 plays an essential role in this pathway.  unfolded protein response is activated in cancerous cells due to their adverse condition to survive and it has been shown that grp...

Systems driven out of equilibrium experience large fluctuations of the dissipated work. The same is true for wavefunction amplitudes in disordered systems close to the Anderson localization transition. In both cases, the probability distribution function is given by the large-deviation ansatz. Here we exploit the analogy between the statistics of work dissipated in a driven single-electron box ...
