BACKGROUND Early onset sepsis remains a major cause for neonatal morbidity and mortality. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to describe and compare the clinical and laboratory characteristics of neonates in neonatal intensive care unit with culture positive and negative early onset sepsis and verify if there were any differences between the groups. METHODS A one year comparative prospect...
The incidence and outcome of group B streptococcal (GBS) sepsis were assessed prospectively between September 2011 and February 2015 in all tertiary care pediatric hospitals of Switzerland. We describe a low incidence of GBS early-onset sepsis (0.12/1000 livebirths) and a predominance of GBS late-onset sepsis (0.36/1000 livebirths), a pattern that has not been reported in other countries.
First six cases of neonatal group B B haemolytic streptococcal sepsis in GHKL & Maternity Hospital K.L. were reported and in one third, it was fatal. Five of the cases were 'early onset' type and one was 'late onset' type. While maternal infant transmission of the disease is important in the 'early onset' type, environmental sources of infection are also significant. No gestational age or birth...
OBJECTIVE To assess clinical and laboratory parameters and serum cytokine levels in 55 neonates who developed early-onset sepsis. METHODS Clinical parameters associated with early-onset neonatal sepsis were assessed. White blood cell differential and serum C-reactive protein and glucose levels were measured upon diagnosis of sepsis and 48 hours later. IL-beta, IL-10, IL-6, and TNF-α levels we...
background: to determine prospectively the prevalence of anaerobic and aerobic infection in early onset (during 72 hours of age) neonatal sepsis, in tehran vali-e-asr hospital. methods: among all the live birth, neonates suspecting of having septicemia were investigated for isolation of microorganisms. culture bottle containing enriched tryptic soy broth was used for standard blood culture sys...
About 20 % of neonates develop sepsis and among them approximately 1% die due to sepsis-related causes. Bacterial pathogens are the commonest cause neonatal which is either early-onset (<72 hours age) or late-onset (>72 hours). Little known about epidemiology antimicrobial susceptibility pattern causing bacterial in Nepal. A prospective study was carried out suspected have admitted Tribhu...
conclusions due to the increasing resistance of pathogens to usual empirical antibiotics, it is reasonable to stress upon preventive measures, so that a minimum number of neonates develop sepsis. results coagulase-negative staphylococci (cons) were the most prevalent pathogens isolated from blood specimens in early and late-onset disease. escherichia coli and klebsiella were the most causative ...
OBJECTIVE To evaluate utility of C-reactive protein (CRP) in the early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis in a tertiary care Newborn Unit in Kenya. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Newborn Unit, Kenyatta National Hospital. SUBJECTS All neonates admitted to Newborn Unit, Kenyatta National Hospital during the study period with suspected sepsis based on specified clinical criteria. RESULTS ...
Background Late onset sepsis is a frequent complication of prematurity, associated with increased mortality and morbidity. Probiotics may prevent late onset sepsis in premature infants. The aim of this study was to determine prophylactic effect of oral probiotics in prevention of late onset sepsis of very preterm infants. Materials and Methods This study was a randomized, double blinded, placeb...
