The motilin agonist erythromycin was used successfully in four infants receiving prolonged parenteral nutrition for severe intestinal dysmotility after gastrointestinal surgery. In a further child with a neuropathic intestinal pseudo-obstruction erythromycin induced a striking small intestinal manometric response, but was without effect in a child with an intestinal myopathy.

46 Aims: To define the sensorimotor characteristics of aero-digestive reflexes evoked 47 upon mid-esophageal provocations in neuropathology infants. Methods: Provocative 48 esophageal motility testing was performed in 20 neuropathology infants and 10 controls 49 at 42.3±0.6 and 38.9±0.9 wk postmenstrual age. Data from 1,073 infusions were 50 examined for the sensory thresholds, response frequen...

BACKGROUND Although gastro-oesophageal reflux is a recognised cause of chronic cough, the role of oesophageal dysmotility is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of abnormal oesophageal motility in a selected group of patients with chronic cough. METHODS Oesophageal manometry and 24 hour pH monitoring were performed in 43 patients with chronic cough, 34 of whom had s...

Patients with reflux oesophagitis have a diminished capacity for distal oesophageal clearance. This is considered to be secondary to acid reflux damage to the oesophageal wall. We have postulated that the observed oesophageal dysmotility is a primary phenomenon. Using 24 hour oesophageal pH monitoring and the solid bolus oesophageal egg transit test, we evaluated the oesophageal transit of 55 p...

Chronic cough is a common symptom carrying significant morbidity which can occur as a result of oesophageal dysmotility. Here we report 2 patients with musculoskeletal disease presenting with chronic cough to our tertiary cough clinic. Prior to referral both patients had been extensively investigated to determine the basis of their cough, with no cause found. Oesophageal studies, using high res...
