BacKGRoUnD Pathological fractures of long bones secondary to metastatic lesions are common.1 Management of pathological humeral diaphyseal fractures with bone loss is challenging. Palliative internal fixation improves pain and quality of life.2 We describe a simple technique to address bone loss of the distal humerus (Fig 1) using Palacos® bone cement (Heraeus, Wehrheim, Germany) following retr...
PURPOSE To report a new locking lateral closing wedge osteotomy used in repairing pediatric supracondylar humerus fracture malunions, which allows for coronal and sagittal plane correction of both cubitus varus and extension. METHODS At our institution, eight children with cubitus varus resulting from prior supracondylar humerus fracture malunions underwent a new technique of lateral closing ...
BACKGROUND There has been lack of epidemiology of proximal humerus fracture using nationwide database in Asia. The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence of proximal humerus fracture and its mortality following proximal humerus fracture in Korean over 50 years of age. METHODS The Korean National Health Insurance data were evaluated to determine the incidence and mortality of p...
A single antegrade Rush nail was used to treat 37 fractures of the distal humerus extending to the olecranon fossa and up to 6.5 cm proximal to it. In order to stabilise the fracture, the bent tip of the Rush nail was directed into the lateral epicondylar ridge. This gave immediate stability. All the fractures united without residual stiffness of the shoulder or elbow.
We describe the case of a 4-month-old male infant diagnosed with early congenital syphilis during evaluation of a left distal humerus fracture. This report emphasizes the importance of screening for syphilis among pregnant women and newborns, and is a reminder of the continued existence of congenital syphilis. (Korean J Pediatr 2009;52:710-712)
Intercondylar fracture of the distal humerus in youth is an extremely rare injury. Three cases have been reported in the literature to date. We describe two cases, aged 15 and 14 years, both of whom were boys. The stability in this injury allowed non-operative treatment and a favorable outcome.
Distal humeral fractures in adults are relatively uncommon injuries that require operative intervention in the majority of cases. Dual plate fixation, with placement of a separate strong plate on each column and orientation of the plates either at 90° or 180° to each other, is indicated for all adult fractures involving both columns of the distal part of the humerus. Acute total elbow arthropla...
The incidence of Monteggia lesion is only 1 to 2% of all childhood forearm injuries and even less in adults [2]. Distal humerus intraarticular fractures constitute 0.5%-7% of all fractures and 30% of elbow fractures [3]. Monteggia lesion have been found to be associated with wrist lesions [1,4,5]. Wiley and Galey [1] & Arazi et al. [6] reported one case each of the ipsilateral supracondylar fra...
BACKGROUND An intra-articular distal humerus malunion can be disabling. To improve function, reduce pain and/or prevent further secondary osteoarthritis an intra-articular corrective osteotomy can be considered. Herein we present the indications, practical guidelines for pre- operative planning and surgical technique. Subsequently, we provide long-term results in a small series. METHODS We in...
Thrower's fractures are spiral fractures of the humerus caused by forceful throwing of a ball. Although these fractures have been cited in the literature, little research exists regarding the significance of stress fractures and fatigue injuries that may precede these injuries. This article presents 3 cases of middle-aged recreational baseball pitchers who sustained mid to distal third spiral h...
