A retrospective observational study in Taiwan, 1998-2004, identified 92 patients with group G streptococcal bacteremia; 86 had Streptococcus dysgalactiae subspecies equisimilis. The most common diagnosis was cellulitis (48 cases), followed by primary bacteremia (34 cases). Infection recurred in 9 patients. Mortality rate was low (3.3%); resistance to quinupristin-dalfopristin was high.

A standardized method of disc testing the sensitivity of gram-positive pathogens to dalfopristin/quinupristin was developed, and then 'field tested' in ten centres in the UK. For a 15 microg disc, zone diameter breakpoints of 20 mm and 15 mm are suggested when organisms are tested on Iso-Sensitest agar and Iso-Sensitest agar supplemented with 5% whole horse blood, respectively.

Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) were detected in two faecal samples (1.3%) of song thrush in Portugal. vanA isolates showed high level vancomycin/teicoplanin resistance, as well as resistance to ciprofloxacin, quinupristin-dalfopristin and cloranfenicol. Thrush can be a reservoir of VRE and transmit these resistant bacteria to other animals including humans.

The MICs of LBM415, a new peptide diformylase inhibitor, were </=0.06 to 4.0 microg/ml for 258 isolates of Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci. A rapid emergence of nosocomial methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection (from 26.3% in 1986 to 77% in 2001) was found. The susceptibility of 200 nonduplicate blood isolates of MRSA and 100 MRSA isolates causing refractory bacteremia to 22 antimicrobial agents disclosed that glycopeptides, quinupristin-dalfopristin, and linezolid remained the most active agents.
