We report a case of contralateral renal displacement due to a giant ipsilateral renal cyst. Drainage and partial excision of the cyst was followed by return of the kidney and liver to their normal positions. Incidentally, a small focus of renal cell carcinoma was found after pathologic examination of the cyst wall. The relevant literature is reviewed.

A morphological type of Sarcocystis cysts found in one of two examined great black-backed gull, Larus marinus (Linnaeus) (Laridae), is considered to represent a new species for which the name Sarcocystis lari sp. n. is proposed and its description is provided. The cysts are ribbon-shaped, very long (the largest fragment found was 6 mm long) and relatively narrow (up to 75 microm). Under a light...

Gastric foregut cyst is a rare congenital disease. In this report, a gastric foregut cyst in a 22-year-old male patient is presented. Fluid-filled gastric ultrasonography and computed tomography demonstrated a cystic, calcified lesion attached to the anterior gastric wall. The same lesion was observed using upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. An exploratory laparotomy revealed a non-communicating...

We report a case of precocious puberty in a 4-year-old boy. Contrast-enhanced T1-weighted MR imaging suggested a pineal cyst with enhancement of the slightly thickened wall and focal wall irregularity. Three-dimensional constructive interference in a steady-state imaging revealed a focal lobulation and a nodule-like area in the lesion. The lesion mimicking a pineal cyst proved to be a germinoma...

A 4-year-old boy presented with vomiting and recurrent cough. He was investigated and found to have thoracic oesophageal duplication cyst. He was taken up for thoracoscopic removal of the cyst. The cyst was attached to the oesophagus and shared a common wall. The boy tolerated the procedure well and follow-up showed no recurrence of the cyst with total resolution of the symptoms. We share our e...

In a recent survey in Oklahoma (USA), 52 free-ranging coyotes were examined for the presence of sarcocysts. Two of these coyotes were found infected with sarcocysts in skeletal muscle. By light microscopy, the cyst wall was thin and smooth. Ultrastructurally, the cyst wall had minute villar protrusions. The sarcocysts were 14.4 to 50.4 microm wide and 46.8 to 99 microm long. This is the first r...

Within warm-blooded animals, Toxoplasma gondii switches from an actively replicating form called a tachyzoite into a slow growing encysted form called a bradyzoite. To uncover the genes involved in bradyzoite development, we screened over 8000 T. gondii insertional mutants by immunofluorescence microscopy. We identified nine bradyzoite development mutants that were defective in both cyst wall f...

The treatment of splenic cysts remains controversial. A 25-year-old Japanese woman with a 10-cm-long abdominal mass in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen complained of mild, dull pain. A huge splenic cyst was confirmed on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. The cyst wall was adherent to the splenic parenchyma to approximately 30% of its maximum diameter, calculated with magn...

A 23-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with the complaint of chest discomfort and dyspnea for the previous 3 months. Upper endoscopy showed a 2.5×2.0cm bulging lesion in the distal esophagus (●" Fig.1). Endoscopic ultrasound revealed a 1.1×2.5cm hypoechoic cystic lesion arising from the muscularis propria (●" Fig.2). Endoscopic submucosal tunnel dissection (ESTD) was performed using a h...

Since the Giardia lamblia cyst wall is necessary for survival in the environment and host infection, we tested the hypothesis that it contains proteins other than the three known cyst wall proteins. Serial analysis of gene expression during growth and encystation revealed a gene, "HCNCp" (High Cysteine Non-variant Cyst protein), that was upregulated late in encystation, and that resembled the c...
