Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has been detected in several species and animal-derived products. To determine whether MRSA is present in poultry, we sampled 50 laying hens and 75 broiler chickens. MRSA was found in some broiler chickens but no laying hens. In all samples, spa type t1456 was found.

An arrest in egg laying associated with a polycystic ovarian follicle syndrome (PCOF) has been recently reported early in the egg production period in turkey hens photostimulated at 30 wk of age (WOA) with continuous light. When autopsied 2 to 3 wk after laying ceased, the ovaries of PCOF hens contained an increased number of mature size (F1) yolky follicles in comparison with normally laying h...

Feed deprivation is the most common method used to induce molting and stimulate multiple egg-laying cycles in laying hens for commercial egg production. Unfortunately, an increased risk of Salmonella enteritidis (SE) colonization may result from the use of this method. Methods to stimulate multiple egg-laying cycles without increasing the risk of SE are needed. In each of 3 experiments, hens ov...

The preventive effect of partially hydrolyzed guar gum (PHGG) on the colonization of Salmonella enteritidis (SE) in young and laying hens was investigated. The effects of feed supplemented with 0.025, 0.05, and 0.1% PHGG was examined on young hens orally infected with SE. The incidence of SE in organs was decreased, the excretion of SE into feces was increased, and the agglutinating antibody ti...

this experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of different levels of costmary(tanacetum balsamita)medicinal plant on performance, egg traits, and blood biochemical parameters of laying hens. hundred-eighty of hi-line laying hens (w 36) from 46 until 58 weeks of age were used in a completely randomized design in five treatments and three replicates (12 birds per replicate). the treatment...

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different levels of black cumin powder on performance, yolk cholesterol content and egg oxidative stability in laying hens. A total of 96 Leghorn laying hens (Hy-Line W-36) of 25 weeks old were randomly distributed among eight cage replicates of three birds each. Experimental diets consisted of different levels (0, 5, 10 and 15 g/kg of diet...

Onion and its flavonoid component, quercetin, increase bone density in rabbits, rodents, and humans. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a similar effect of onion on laying hens. Thirty-two Hy-line W36 White Leghorn hens at 30 weeks of age were randomly divided into 2 groups, i.e., control and treatment (n = 16). The hens were kept at 2-hen cages, each cage providing 658...

An explorative field study was carried out to determine risk factors for Salmonella infections in commercial laying hen flocks. For this purpose, 29 laying hen farms, including farms using conventional and alternative housing systems, were intensively sampled. An on-farm questionnaire was used to collect information on general management practices and specific characteristics of the sampled flo...

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary β-mannanase supplementation and palm kernel meal (PKM) inclusion (5%) on laying performance, egg quality and nutrient utilizability of laying hens with 73 weeks of age. A total of 240 Lohmann brown laying hens with average 77.5% egg production were randomly allocated with 60 hens per treatment, 4 replicates per treatment and 15 hens per...

Cage layer fatigue was first noticed after laying hens began to be housed in cages in the mid-20th century. Hens producing eggs at a high rate were most susceptible to the disease. Early research revealed that cage layer fatigue was associated with osteoporosis and bone brittleness. Severe osteoporosis leads to spontaneous bone fractures commonly in the costochondral junctions of the ribs, the ...
