BACKGROUND Corynebacterium species are part of the normal skin flora. The incidence of nosocomial infections caused by Corynebacterium species have increased substantially over the past two decades. However, the clinical course of Corynebacterium peritonitis complicating peritoneal dialysis remains unclear. METHOD We reviewed all the Corynebacterium peritonitis in our dialysis unit from 1995 ...

Genes encoding an ATP-binding cassette transporter system involved in hemin iron utilization from Corynebacterium ulcerans were cloned and characterized. The genes are homologous to a hemin transport system previously identified in Corynebacterium diphtheriae. Disruption of the hmuT gene, which encodes the putative hemin receptor, resulted in greatly reduced ability of C. ulcerans to use hemin ...

Corynebacterium diphtheriae and Corynebacterium ulcerans are rarely isolated from clinical samples in Belgium. A case of toxigenic C. ulcerans in a woman is described, which confirms that this pathogen is still present. During investigation of the patient's cats, only a non-toxigenic toxin-bearing C. diphtheriae strain was detected.

The authors report a fatal case of Corynebacterium sp. endocarditis. Corynebacterium spp. are non-sporulating, pleomorphic Gram-positive bacilli. In particular the authors have identified a species of Corynebacterium very closely related to C striatum. This is C simulans. The authors were able to identify the genus and species using various phenotypic tests. Highlighted here is the importance o...

A 28 year old man with no underlying disease developed a cavity and multiple nodules in the lung from which Corynebacterium equi was isolated. He experimented with organic solvents and microorganisms including Corynebacterium species for several years. Computed tomography of his pulmonary lesions revealed that these nodules were related to the bronchial tree. Histologically, the lesions were co...

Corynebacterium species other than Corynebacterium diphtheriae rarely cause infections in human but rather reside in flora, however they have been reported to cause opportunistic infections in both immunocompromised and immunecompetent patients. Here we report for the first time a case of an elderly female patient presenting with a fatal urosepsis caused by a recently defined pathogen, Coryneba...

The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry technique was employed to characterize n-decane oxidation products of Corynebacterium strains 7E1C and 269 (SNAM Progetti collection) after 73 h of incubation at 35 C. Corynebacterium 7E1C accumulated consistent amounts of esters of long chain acids with long chain alcohols, mainly decyldecanoate as well as products with mono- and diterminal carboxylic f...

Sir, The use of antibiotics in aquaculture production has been associated with the isolation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in fish as well as pollution of the fish farm environment. Previously, 25 tetracycline-resistant bacteria isolated from four freshwater Chilean salmon farms were characterized. Fifteen of the isolates carried one of seven different tetracycline (tet) genes [tet(A), tet(B...

Corynebacterium phoceense strain MC1 (= CSUR P1905 = DSM 100570) is a novel Corynebacterium species isolated from the urine of a kidney transplant recipient as a part of a culturomics study. Corynebacterium phoceense is a Gram-positive, sporogenous, strictly aerobic, and nonmotile coccobacillus. Here we describe strain MC1 and provide its complete annotated genome sequence according to the taxo...

The adhesion of Corynebacterium renale, Corynebacterium pilosum, and Corynebacterium cystitidis to various epithelial cell layers of bovine urinary bladders was examined. Adhesion was most efficient to the urinary sediment epithelial cells and the superficial cells immediately before shedding, followed by the remaining superficial cells and intermediate cells in this order, and least efficient ...
