Bed-related situation monitoring is a crucial task in geriatric healthcare. Due to shortage of qualified caregivers, automatic detection of the situation in a bedroom is desirable since risks may arise when an elder gets up from the bed alone. In addition, analyzing the total amount of care time of an elder is helpful when the social effect on the improvement of the elder’s health needs to be e...

A lot of research has been done in the area of context-aware computing. Even though, the term context seems often not to be well defined. We attribute this problem partly to the fact that research often focuses on syntactical and technical issues of contextuality and does not take a knowledge level perspective on context. When including the knowledge level, some sort of analysis is required on ...

Maintaining both overview and detail while navigating in graphs, such as road networks, airline route maps, or social networks, is difficult, especially when targets of interest are located far apart. We present a navigation technique called Dynamic Insets that provides context awareness for graph navigation. Dynamic insets utilize the topological structure of the network to draw a visual inset...

People of all ages and backgrounds are prone to forgetting information, even about their personal experiences. Existing systems to support people in remembering such information either continuously record a person’s experiences or provide means to store and retrieve clearly defined, isolated pieces of data. We propose a new approach: combining contextawareness with semantic information. We beli...

Location awareness is a crucial part of the context-awareness mechanism for ubicomputing. This paper explores how usefull is the location awareness history for an office based low-cost context-awareness environment. Capturing location awareness data into a relational database is simple and feasible in office environment. We use extended SQL to access the location awareness history database to p...

Ubiquitous Web systems have to deal with varying context information in order to support context awareness. Accomplishing this requirement necessitates gathering, processing and representing that information, so that it can be used for adapting Web applications. In this paper we propose a mechanism for modeling dynamically changing context information like user’s device capabilities and locatio...

In this paper we give an overview of context-aware middleware platforms. They are characterized in terms of properties such as communication, context management and adaptation. We present a description of different platforms and their properties. key words: context-awareness, middleware platform, pervasive computing.

There is no free ride in enhancing context-awareness of artifacts as artifacts lack the ability to (re-) negotiate the meaning of particular situations. We therefore argue that research in context-awareness should be complemented by orthogonal research in what we call context-transparency.

We examine the relationship between context engines and content management systems, showing by means of an example application how these should mutually interact with each other to ensure the timely delivery of relevant information. We show how a content management system can use context information to enrich its functionality and also how a general and abstract approach to content management c...

Activity recognition fits within the bigger framework of context awareness. In this paper, we report on our efforts to recognize user activity from accelerometer data. Activity recognition is formulated as a classification problem. Performance of base-level classifiers and meta-level classifiers is compared. Plurality Voting is found to perform consistently well across different settings.
