The aim of the study was to determine the incidence and types of speech disorders in patients with acute stroke. The study was performed in 936 acute stroke patients admitted to University Department of Neurology, Tuzla University Clinical Center, in the period from January 1, 2007 through December 31, 2008. Out of 936 study patients, speech disorders were verified on admission in 771 (82.37%) ...
Background & Aims: Stroke incidence is 15 million people world wide annually and one third of these patients suffer from aphasia. Aphasia is often associated with significant disability in patients. Costs due to cerebrovascular diseases play an important role in national health expenditures. We aimed to assess the effect of piracetam in treatment of aphasia. Methods: Patients with acute ischemi...
Aphasia is one of the most socially disabling post-stroke deficits. Although traditional therapies have been shown to induce adequate clinical improvement, aphasic symptoms often persist. Therefore, unconventional rehabilitation techniques which act as a substitute or an adjunct approaches are urgently needed. The present review provides overview efficacy and safety principal proposed over last...
Background The Aachen Aphasia Test (AAT) is still the main test in use for evaluation of aphasic deficits German-speaking individuals (Huber et al., 1983, 1984). has also been adapted to Italian language (Luzzatti 1996) and was administered 384 people with aphasia (PWA) almost exclusively after left-hemisphere brain damage (plus 24 residual symptoms 8 without aphasia) 88 control individuals. st...
The present case report introduces a patient with fluent aphasia, anterograde amnesia and anosmia due to herpes simplex encephalitis after her first delivery. The left medial temporal lobe was one of the main areas involved. On aphasia testing she showed severe anomia on both confrontation and free recall, agraphia, alexia, repetition disorder and some auditory comprehension impairments. Therap...
Three patients with otherwise typical Wernicke's aphasia showed consistent superiority of visual over auditory comprehension. The precedents for and anatomical basis of a selective auditory deficit in Wernicke's aphasia are discussed, including the relationship to pure word deafness. One implication of spared visual language function may be the use of gesture in language therapy for such patients.
Research on the neural substrate of aphasia recovery has consistently increased since the advent of functional neuroimaging. The evidence from therapy-induced aphasia recovery studies shows that better recovery results from the reactivation of left hemisphere function; still, the specific left hemisphere key areas that sign successful outcome with a specific therapy approach remain to be identi...
