We present first observations of wetting phenomena in depletion interaction driven, phase separated colloidal dispersions (coated silica-cyclohexane-polydimethylsiloxane). The contact angle of the colloidal liquid-gas interface at a solid substrate (coated glass) was determined for a series of compositions. Upon approach to the critical point, a transition occurs from partial to complete wetting.

We present a theoretical approach which maps polymer blends onto mixtures of soft-colloidal particles. The analytical mesoscale pair correlation functions reproduce well data from united atom molecular dynamics simulations of polyolefin mixtures without fitting parameters. The theory exactly recovers the analytical expressions for density and concentration fluctuation structure factors of soft-...

This article provides a concise review of a new state of colloidal matter called nematic liquid-crystal colloids. These colloids are obtained by dispersing microparticles of different shapes in a nematic liquid crystal that acts as a solvent for the dispersed particles. The microparticles induce a local deformation of the liquid crystal, which then generates topological defects and long-range f...

To shed light on the origin of colloidal stability in ionic liquids,we focus on a model colloidal system (maghemite nanoparticles) in which surface charge and counterion nature can be controlled at will. We thus evidence the crucial role of interfacial features on dispersion quality in a standard ionic liquid, ethylammonium nitrate.

Colloidal stability of antibody solutions, i.e., the propensity of the folded protein to precipitate, is an important consideration in formulation development of therapeutic monoclonal antibodies. In a protein solution, different pathways including crystallization, colloidal aggregation, and liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) can lead to the formation of precipitates. The kinetics of crystal...

When liquid crystals are confined to finite volumes, the competition between the surface anchoring imposed by the boundaries and the intrinsic orientational symmetry-breaking of these materials gives rise to a host of intriguing phenomena involving topological defect structures. For synthetic molecular mesogens, like the ones used in liquid-crystal displays, these defect structures are independ...

The liquid-liquid phase separation of a binary solvent can be arrested by colloidal particles trapped at the interface [K. Stratford, Science 309, 2198 (2005)]. We show experimentally that the colloidal network so formed can remain stable after fully remixing the liquids, creating a new type of gel in which colloids in a single-phase solvent have locally planar coordination. We argue that this ...

Abstract Background Colorectal adenomatous polyps (CAPs) are considered precancerous lesions of colorectal cancer (CRC). The gut microbiota participates in the process digestion and, process, produces metabolites, mainly short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), secondary bile and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). This study aimed to investigate constituents metabolites faeces CAP patients identify or tha...

It is often said that glass is a frozen liquid. In a glass, the molecules are disordered like a liquid, but macroscopically, the sample no longer flows, behaving like a solid. While we can describe what a glass is, we still don’t fully understand the transition to the glassy state [1]. One way to learn about the glass transition is to study model systems. Perhaps the simplest experimental model...

This mini-review discusses the recent contribution of theoretical and computational physics as well as experimental efforts to the understanding of the behavior of colloidal particles in confined geometries and at liquid crystalline interfaces. Theoretical approaches used to study trapping, longand short-range interactions, and assembly of solid particles and liquid inclusions are outlined. As ...
