The susceptibilities of 107 urinary isolates of coagulase-negative staphylococci to 19 antibiotics was determined by an agar dilution technique. Major differences in the antimicrobial susceptibilities of species of coagulase-negative staphylococci were observed. Staphylococcus epidermidis was more resistant to a wider spectrum of antibiotics than was Staphylococcus saprophyticus.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the in vitro susceptibility and cross-resistance of gatifloxacin and moxifloxacin vs older fluoroquinolones among coagulase-negative staphylococci recovered from patients with clinical endophthalmitis. METHODS A combination of E tests and disk diffusion methods was used to determine in vitro susceptibility and cross-resistance for 111 coagulase-negative staphylococci iso...

Jay, James M. (Wayne State University, Detroit, Mich.). Production of lysozyme by staphylococci and its correlation with three other extracellular substances. J. Bacteriol. 91:1804-1810. 1966.-Lysozyme production was determined on plates containing 1 mg/ml of Lysozyme Substrate in Heart Infusion Agar with incubation at 37 C for 48 hr. Its production was compared with that of alpha-hemolysin and...

PURPOSE The aim of this study was to compare the resistance patterns of bacteria in vitreous fluid from patients undergoing vitrectomy for diagnostic reasons, with bacteria of other nosocomial infections. METHODS Vitreous fluid samples (n=144) were obtained from 133 patients undergoing vitrectomy for endophthalmitis, and 11 for uveitis as suspected endophthalmitis. They were Gram stained and ...

Vancomycin resistance has been reported in clinical isolates of both coagulase-negative staphylococci and Staphylococcus aureus. The emerging threat of widespread vancomycin resistance poses a serious public health concern given the fact that vancomycin has long been the preferred treatment of antibiotic-resistant gram-positive organisms. Though major efforts are now being focused on improving ...

Slime-producing coagulase-negative staphylococci are pathogens in vascular surgery by virtue of their ability to adhere to and persist on prosthetic graft material. Inguinal and abdominal skin sites were cultured in 41 patients upon hospitalization, and slime production and antimicrobial susceptibility were assessed in all recovered staphylococcal isolates. Twenty-one patients eventually underw...

Methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci were isolated from the nares and skin of 1- to 8-week-old healthy chickens in three flocks from a farm. Isolation of methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci was positive for 72 (25.7%) of the 280 chickens tested, with the frequency varying from 2.2 to 100% according to flock. A total of 45 appropriate isolates were selected a...

Bovine mastitis is one of the major ill-health of cattle and buffaloes, responsible for great economic loss to dairy industry affecting livestock farmers worldwide. The major economic consequences of clinical bovine mastitis are due to treatment, loss in milk production, culling, changes in product quality and the risk of other diseases (Halasa et al., 2007). For etiological diagnosis of bovine...

Four commercially available rapid agglutination tests for the identification of Staphylococcus aureus were compared with the tube coagulase test for the identification of 300 methicillin-resistant isolates of staphylococci. Isolates tested included 207 methicillin-resistant S. aureus and 93 coagulase-negative staphylococci, collected from five medical centers. Strain variability was documented ...

The clinical importance of coagulase-positive staphylococci is well-known. In fact, Staphylococcus aureus is so often considered a pathogen that few laboratories appreciate that up to 25% of these strains isolated from blood cultures are actually contaminants from skin flora.' Conversely, coagulase-negative staphylococci have so long been considered an environmental contaminant that the pathoge...
