Cord formation is a characteristic property of the cultured Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex species. We describe a case of Mycobacterium marinum demonstrating robust cord formation. Nontuberculous mycobacteria can form true cords in broth culture but do so rarely, despite the fact that many species contain the cell wall glycolipid that mediates cord formation.

The Sa442 DNA fragment, originally described by Martineau et al. (3), is a popular DNA target for identification of Staphylococcus aureus by PCR (2–6). Several PCR-based assays targeting this DNA fragment alone or in combination with a mecA PCR for identification of a methicillin-resistant S. aureus have been described (3, 4). Apart from having been established as being unique for S. aureus, th...

Here we present the complete genome sequence of Providencia stuartii MRSN 2154, isolated from an Afghan national. P. stuartii is a Gram-negative bacillus capable of causing infections in a wide variety of human tissues. Because Providencia readily acquires plasmids bearing drug resistance loci, it is of growing clinical significance.

Carbapenem resistance was studied in two sets of Citrobacter freundii strains: (i) strain CFr950, resistant to imipenem (MIC, 16 microg/ml) and isolated in vivo during imipenem therapy, and strain CFr950-Rev, the spontaneous, imipenem-susceptible revertant of CFr950 selected in vitro, and (ii) strains CFr801 and CFr802, two imipenem-resistant mutants selected in vitro from the susceptible clini...

BACKGROUND Clostridium difficile are gram-positive, spore forming anaerobic bacteria that are the leading cause of healthcare-associated diarrhea, usually associated with antibiotic usage. Metronidazole is currently the first-line treatment for mild to moderate C. difficile diarrhea however recurrence occurs at rates of 15-35%. There are few reports of C. difficile metronidazole resistance in t...
