We present a method for generating femtosecond duration x-ray pulses using a single-pass free-electron laser (FEL). This method uses an energy-chirped electron beam to produce a frequency-chirped x-ray pulse through selfamplified spontaneous emission (SASE). After the undulator we consider passing the radiation through a monochromator. The frequency is correlated to the longitudinal position wi...

We propose a new accelerating concept, the chirpedpulse inverse free-electron laser (CPIFEL). We study the inverse free-electron laser (IFEL) accelerator both theoretically and computationally, and show that by using a femtosecond (fs), ultra-high-intensity drive laser pulse, the IFEL interaction bandwidth and accelerating gradient are increased, thus yielding large energy gains. Using a chirpe...

An integrated-optic dispersion compensator that uses chirped waveguide gratings is designed and fabricated. The 7-mm-long chirped grating is realized by a recently proposed method of curving a waveguide through a uniform grating. At 800 nm, the fabricated device exhibits a reflection bandwidth in excess of 0.5 nm and a nearly quadratic phase response corresponding to a fiber dispersion–length p...

A simple technique for achieving high spectral resolution coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) spectra with a femtosecond laser system is presented. A linearly chirped and stretched ( 10 ps) pump pulse generates CARS signal only when overlapped in time with the Stokes pulse (90 fs), creating a ‘temporal slit’ that defines the spectral resolution of the technique. Multiplex CARS spectra ...

This paper reviews techniques for improving the temporal contrast and spatial beam quality in an ultra-intense laser system that is based on chirped-pulse amplification (CPA). We describe the design, performance, and characterization of our laser system, which has the potential for achieving a peak power of 600 TW. We also describe OPEN ACCESS Appl. Sci. 2013, 3 215 applications of the laser sy...

We show that waveform-synthesized chirped laser fields are efficient tools for coherent harmonic control. A single harmonic order, or two harmonic orders, can be selectively enhanced by using a two-color field allowing a moderate linear chirp for each color. Different harmonic orders within a wide spectral range can be selectively enhanced by adjusting the laser parameters. Our theory bridges t...

In the paper, a 3 µm mid-infrared (MIR) high energy ultrafast Er:ZBLAN fiber laser and amplification system is presented. The 3µm seed pulses were generated through an Yb-doped ultrafast fiber laser pumped optical parametric amplification (OPA). A pulse energy of 12.4 µJ is generated at a repetition rate of 100 kHz with a pulse duration of 103 fs. A Er:ZBLAN fiber amplifier was used to further ...

Quantum entanglement of two photons created by spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) can be used to probe quantum optical phenomena during a single cycle of light. Harris [Opt. Express 98, 063602 (2007)] suggested using ultrabroad parametric fluorescenc generated from a quasi-phase-matched (QPM) device whose poling period is chirped. In the Harris's original proposal, it is assumed that ...

The production of high charge and high brightness electron beams places increasingly challenging demands on the drive laser used at the A0 photoinjector in the Fermilab. The IR and UV laser pulse lengths need to be optimized for such purpose. We have experimentally investigated two different ways to change the UV laser pulse length on the cathode; either by changing the bandwidth of the oscilla...
