We measured larval growth rates of 2 dominant stream detritivore groups to assess the mechanism underlying declines in invertebrate production following exclusion of terrestrial litter inputs to a forested headwater stream. Larval Tallaperla spp. (Plecoptera:Peltoperlidae) were chosen as representative shredders and non-Tanypodinae Chironomidae (Diptera) were selected as representative collecto...

The genus Compterosmittia Sæther, 1981 from China is reviewed. Three new species, C. duodecima sp. n., C. lii sp. n. and C. procera sp. n. are described as adult males. C. nerius (Curran, 1930), C. oyabelurida (Sasa, Kawai et Ueno, 1988) and C. togalimea (Sasa et Okazawa, 1992) are recorded from China for the first time and annotated; as a result the diagnosis for the genus is emended. A key to...

We identified a new species, Nanocladius (Plecopteracoluthus) shigaensis, from Shiga and Gifu Prefectures, Japan, whose larvae are phoretic on nymphs of Plecoptera. Although this new species is morphologically similar to Nanocladius (Plecopteracoluthus) asiaticus Hayashi (1998), which is phoretic on Megaloptera larvae, it differs from N. (P.) asiaticus: the color of the larval head capsule is l...

Two new species, Dicrotendipes nudussp. n. and Dicrotendipes saetanumerosussp. n. are described and the male imagines are illustrated; the record of Dicrotendipes fusconotatus (Kieffer) is the first for China. A key to the males of Dicrotendipes in China is given.

Two new species of the genus Parakiefferiella Thienemann, 1936 (Parakiefferiella fasciata Liu & Wang, sp. n. and Parakiefferiella liupanensis Liu & Wang, sp. n.) are described as adult males from China. Parakiefferiella tamatriangulata Sasa is recorded from China for the first time. A key to the known adult males of Parakiefferiella from China is presented. The generic diagnosis of male Parakie...

The use of environmental DNA (eDNA) in biodiversity assessments offers a step-change in sensitivity, throughput and simultaneous measures of ecosystem diversity and function. There remains, however, a need to examine eDNA persistence in the wild through simultaneous temporal measures of eDNA and biota. Here, we use metabarcoding of two markers of different lengths, derived from an annual time s...

Examination of the syntypes of Metriocnemusvolitans Goetghebuer, 1940 revealed that these specimens belong to the genus Chaetocladius and are not con-specific with Gymnometriocnemusvolitans (Goetghebuer, 1940) sensu Brundin (1956) and Sæther (1983). A literature search showed that Gymnometriocnemuskamimegavirgus Sasa & Hirabayashi, 1993 fits well with the species figured and diagnosed by Brundi...

Colosmittia brasileira sp. n. from São Paulo state, Brazil, is described and illustrated based on a male imago. The genus Colosmittia Andersen & Saether was described based on a single species, C. clavata Andersen & Saether, from the West Usambara Mountains, Tanzania, East Africa. The discovery of the new species shows that Colosmittia has an Afro-Brazilian distribution pattern.
