Background: The determination of common diseases in a region is a medical and health priority of that region. Ocular emergencies can cause permanent vision loss if they are not recognized and treated promptly.  Preserve vision of patients, We arranged this study  in Moradi hospital (Kerman, Iran), to estimate our regional situation. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional stud...

ABSTRACT In order to evaluate time course of changes in serum concentration of thyroid hormones, cortisol and ACTH in patients exposed to chemical weapons containing sulfur mustard, we measured serum concentrations of hormones on the first, third and fifth week following injury in 13 soldiers and compared them to the results obtained from 34 control men. Free T4 and T3 indices were decrease...

Background: Biloma is a rare abnormal localized accumulation of bile out of biliary tree due to an injury. It has different non-specific clinical features and its diagnosis is based on clinical signs, radiologic findings and chemical analysis of aspirated liquid. Considering the non-specific clinical features, early diagnosis and treatment can have an effective role in the decrease of complicat...

Background: Long-term use of levofloxacin can cause alterations in the liver function. This study aimed to determine the protective effect of black seed oil (BSO) against liver injury due to levofloxacin administration in rats. Methods: The chemical composition of BSO was analyzed with gas chromatography and mass spectrophotometry (GC-MS). Rats (n=30) were treated daily with levofloxacin and ...

Renal ischemia reperfusion injury contributes patho-physiological imbalance of acute renal failure that comprises of generation of reactive oxygen species, nitric oxide and peroxynitrite and inflammation involving cytokine/adhesion molecule cascade, finally leads to cell death. Oxygen deprival associated with ischemia that in turn lead to decline ATP production is the characteristic feature usu...

Activation of primary afferent nociceptors produces acute, short-lived pain, and tissue or nerve injury induces long-term enhancement of nociceptive processing, manifested as hypersensitivity to thermal and mechanical stimulation. Here we used a chemical-genetic and pharmacological approach to study the contribution of the receptor tyrosine kinase, type 2 (TrkB) to the generation and maintenanc...

Alkaline conditions in the oral cavity may be caused by a variety of stimuli, including tobacco products, antacids, alkaline drinking water and bicarbonate toothpaste. However, the effects of an alkaline pH on the oral mucosa had not been elucidated. The purpose of this study was to investigate how basal keratinocytes are actively involved in re-epithelialization after alkaline chemical injury....

Toxicology seeks to understand and quantify injurious chemico-biological interactions. The application of this understanding is prediction of the likelihood of occurrence of injury to human health or to undesirable alteration of ecological balance. The key to understanding chemical induced biological injury is development of improved methods of measuring changes in cellular function and structu...

Chemical industries being the seat of dangerous occurrences frequently resulting in injuries, an occupational injury surveillance study was initiated involving 307 permanent and 419 temporary workers in a chemical company to understand the contribution of different possible factors on injury causation. Risk calculation was undertaken in relation to every individual factor using univariate and m...

Anhydrous ammonia, a widespread industrial chemical, can cause severe inhalation and ophthalmic injuries, as well as cutaneous burns. We present five patients with ammonia injury treated at our burn center after an explosion in a warehouse. The challenges inherent in managing the pulmonary complications of this injury are emphasized.
