How we see is today explained by physical optics and retinal transduction, followed by feature detection, in the cortex, by a bank of parallel independent spatial-frequency-selective channels. It is assumed that the observer uses whichever channels are best for the task at hand. Our current results demand a revision of this framework: Observers are not free to choose which channels they use. We...

High-resolution multi-beam bathymetry, 3D and 2D seismic reflection profiles from the South China Sea are used to investigate the morphology, characteristics, origin and implications to petroleum systems of recurrent slope failure in the Qiongdongnan Basin, northern South China Sea. Seven Late Miocene-Holocene mass-transport deposits (MTDs) and numerous submarine canyons were identified on the ...

Abstract The flow field in the Toyama Deep-Sea Channel (TDSC) Japan Sea was investigated based on mooring observations. An asymmetric current system accompanying offshore and onshore currents over east- west-side slopes channel, respectively, is suggested. A bottom intensified characteristic observed at stations Yamato Basin. channel also suggested by distribution of water characteristics acros...

Two K(+)-selective channels in neonatal rat atrial cells activated by lipophilic compounds have been characterized in detail. The arachidonic acid-stimulated channel (IK.AA) had a slope conductance of 124 +/- 17 pS at +30 mV in symmetrical 140 mM potassium and a mean open time of approximately 1 ms, and was relatively voltage independent. IK.AA activity was reversibly increased by lowering pH t...

The characteristics of submerged flow below vertical gate with sill upstream of horizontal diverging channel reach are analyzed based on experimental investigation. The experimental program is conducted in a laboratory flume with 10 cm wide, 31 cm deep and 3.0 m long. A diverging channel reach with fixed length and constant divergence angle is used. Polygonal sills with constant height, constan...

[1] The proposed Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission would provide measurements of water surface elevation (WSE) for characterization of storage change and discharge. River channel bathymetry is a significant source of uncertainty in estimating discharge from WSE measurements, however. In this paper, we demonstrate an ensemble-based data assimilation (DA) methodology for estimatin...

One measure of the voltage dependence of ion channel conductance is the amount of gating charge that moves during activation and vice versa. The limiting slope method, introduced by Almers (Almers, W. 1978. Rev. Physiol. Biochem. Pharmacol. 82:96-190), exploits the relationship of charge movement and voltage sensitivity, yielding a lower limit to the range of single channel gating charge displa...

In IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN (WLAN) systems, techniques such as acknowledgement, retransmission and transmission rate adaptation are frame-level mechanisms designed for combating transmission errors. Recently practical sub-frame level schemes, such as frame combining and partial packet recovery, have been proposed by the research community. In this paper, we present experimental results obtained...

Rate-equilibrium free energy relationship (REFER) analysis provides information on transition-state structures and has been applied to reveal the temporal sequence in which the different regions of an ion channel protein move during a closed-open conformational transition. To date, the theory used to interpret REFER relationships has been developed only for equilibrium mechanisms. Gating of mos...

Applying Bragg gratings in Al2O3 channel waveguides, we demonstrate distributed Bragg reflectors with Qfactors of 1.0210 6 . An integrated Al2O3:Yb 3+ waveguide laser with 67% slope efficiency and 47 mW output power is achieved with such cavities.
