Aneurysm of vein of Galen is a rare congenital malformation with reported incidence of less than 1% of cerebral vascular malformations. Most cases present in neonatal life with congestive cardiac failure. We report a case of aneurysm of vein of Galen diagnosed in intrauterine life at 36 weeks of gestation. The importance of third trimester Doppler ultrasound is highlighted.
Previous studies have shown that selective cerebral profound hypothermia combined with antegrade cerebral perfusion can improve resistance to cerebral hypoxia-ischemia in monkeys. The aim of this study was to observe the effect of selective cerebral profound hypothermia on the ultrastructure and vimentin expression in monkey hippocampi after severe cerebral ischemia. Eight healthy adult rhesus ...
Address for Correspondence: Dr. Ashwini C Appaji, Associate Professor of Anatomy, M S Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore 560054, Karnataka, India. E-Mail: [email protected] Background: Vein of Labbe is the major inferior anastomotic channel that connects the middle cerebral vein to the transverse sinus. It drains most of the temporal lobe and is clinically very important as injury to...
The vast majority of cerebral vascular malformations reported in the antenatal literature are aneurysmal malformations of the vein of Galen. Other types of intracranial vascular malformations are exceptional in fetuses. The authors present a case of prenatal diagnosis of intracranial pial arteriovenous fistula, not involving the vein of Galen and not showing abnormal intracranial anatomic featu...
Evidence of damage to cerebral vein walls was sought in 70 cases of multiple sclerosis. Seventy control cases were also examined. The multiple sclerosis cases showed venous intramural fibrinoid deposition (7%), recent haemorrhages (17%), old haemorrhages revealed by haemosiderin deposition (30%), thrombosis (6%) and thickened veins (19%). In all, 41% of all multiple sclerosis cases showed some ...
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Transcranial color-coded duplex sonography (TCCS) of intracranial veins and sinuses in adults is a new, emerging application of ultrasonographic imaging. This study reports a standardized examination protocol for venous TCCS and provides reference data for clinical application. METHODS In 130 healthy volunteers (mean age, 45.9+/-16.9 years; range, 14 to 77 years) the in...
The symptoms following sinus and vein occlusion observed in patients and experimental animals display a considerable variability that so far remains largely unexplained. In a rat cortical vein occlusion model using a photochemical thrombotic technique, we examined changes in the cerebral venous flow pattern by fluorescence angiography and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and cerebral blood v...
Background and Purpose—Transcranial color-coded duplex sonography (TCCS) of intracranial veins and sinuses in adults is a new, emerging application of ultrasonographic imaging. This study reports a standardized examination protocol for venous TCCS and provides reference data for clinical application. We describe the neuroradiologic findings in a 7-year-old boy with anomalous intracranial venous drainage and cerebral calcification. CT scans demonstrated that his scalp mass was a plexus of scalp veins filled through the emissary foramen, and there were cerebral calcifications. Angiography revealed bilateral sigmoid sinus atresia with most of the intracranial venous drainage via the prominent ...
A Study of Regional Autoregulation in the Cerebral Circulation to Increased Perfusion Pressure in Normocapnia and Hypercapnia • Catheterization of Labb6's vein and of a pial branch of the middle cerebral artery has been performed on anesthetized baboons. Closure of the skull has enabled the reaction of the venous outflow from Labbe's vein to be monitored in response to pressure step increases i...
