Cervical uterine cancer (CUC) spreads locally (pelvis and paraortic lymphnodes) or distantly (lungs, liver and bones). Metastasis to central nervous system (CNS) are rare. There are about 80 cases reported in the literature. Outcome is poor and survival varies from 3 to 6 months. Three cases of CNS metastasis from CUC are reported, one infratentorial and two supratentorials in location. In one ...

INTRODUCTION Afatinib is an effective first-line treatment in patients with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutated non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and has shown activity in patients progressing on EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). First-line afatinib is also effective in patients with central nervous system (CNS) metastasis. Here we report on outcomes of pretreated NSCLC patie...

Unlike the more widely reported gradient-echo echo-planar perfusion-weighted imaging (EPI-PWI) technique, spin-echo (SE) EPI relative cerebral blood volume maps select for blood volume in microvessels <8 microm in diameter. This first report of SE-EPI PWI for distinguishing brain metastasis from high-grade glioma demonstrated 88% sensitivity and 72% specificity in 83 patients. We discuss differ...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The purpose of this study is to investigate the diagnostic utility of fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) in differentiating between glioma and metastasis by assessing for nonenhancing adjacent cortical signal intensity abnormality in patients who present with a solitary enhancing cerebral lesion. METHODS After approval from the institutional ethics committee wa...

Squamous cell carcinoma of the anus is a relatively uncommon GI malignancy. When it does occur, it metastasizes in only a small minority of patients. Spread of anal squamous cell carcinoma to the brain is exceedingly rare, and has been previously reported only three times in the medical literature. We report the case of a 67 year old male who was diagnosed on presentation with a poorly differen...

Tumour emboli from an endocardial metastasis of an endometrial stromal sarcoma caused recurrent and ultimately fatal strokes in a woman of 40. Endocardial metastases are rare. They are known to embolise to the pulmonary and systemic arteries but not to cause recurrent cerebral emboli.

The ability of cancer cells to undergo invasion and migration is a prerequisite for tumor metastasis. Rho, a Ras-related small GTPase, and the Rho-associated coiled coil-containing protein kinases (Rho kinases, ROCK1 and ROCK2) are key regulators of focal adhesion, actomyosin contraction, and thus cell motility. Inhibitors of this pathway have been shown to inhibit tumor cell motility and metas...

A renal T-cell lymphoma with exclusive cerebral metastasis was diagnosed in a 5-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier bitch euthanased for aggression. This is the first recorded case of primary renal lymphoma in a dog. Immune suppression, due to chronic canine monocytic ehrlichiosis, may account for the unusual primary site and metastatic pattern of the tumour.

Leiomyosarcoma is an uncommon tumor that rarely metastasizes to the brain. It has been suggested that improved chemotherapy-resulting in improved survival rates-may have changed the metastatic pattern of this tumor, with an increasing frequency of cerebral metastasis. We present two histologically proven cases of leiomyosarcoma, one with a metastatic lesion in the cerebrum and the other in the ...

UNLABELLED A 57-year old man was referred to the Urology Department due to gross hematuria; abdominal ultrasound revealed an unspecific solid tumor of the left bladder wall. Ultrasound, transurethral resection of the bladder mass with subsequent histological analysis, thoracic and abdominal computed tomography-scan and brain magnetic resonance imaging were performed. He was diagnosed with a bla...
