A survey was carried out to investigate the prevalence of hard tick species (Acari: Ixodidae) on cattle in Mazandaran province, Iran. A total of 953 ticks were collected from 86 infested cattle during activating seasons of ticks during 2004-2005. Nine species were identified: Boophilus annulatus (51.3%), Rhipicephalus bursa (16.8%), Haemaphysalis punctata (6.3%), Ixodes ricinus (6.8%), Hyalomma...

Like all parasites, ticks can be spread easily along with their hosts. Ticks are obligate parasites of vertebrates, to which they attach themselves for varying periods of time, and are well-adapted to this mode of transport. Once the transport stage is complete and they have detached at destination, they are also able to wait several months for the arrival of a new host on which they will conti...

| Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is an infectious viral disease of cattle that results in serious economic and international trade consequences. Recently, hard ticks have been incriminated in lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) transmission. The present study attempted to investigate the role of Rhipicephalus annulatus ticks, collected from naturally infected animals, in the transmission of LSDV. A total...

The efficacy of ivermectin administered orally to cattle infested with all parasitic stages of Boophilus microplus (Canestrini) ticks was evaluated. Ivermectin capsules were administered to two separate groups of cattle at a dose rate of either 25 or 50 mg/kg for a period of 21 consecutive days. A third group of calves received a placebo capsule each day and served as a control. Although the ov...

Anaplasma marginale is a tick-borne rickettsial pathogen of cattle that is endemic throughout large areas of the United States. Cattle that survive acute infection become life-long persistently infected carriers. In the intermountain west the Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni Stiles, is the most common vector of A. marginale. Male D. andersoni acquire A. marginale when feeding on ...

Resistance against synthetic pyrethroid (SP) products for the control of cattle ticks in Australia was detected in the field in 1984, within a very short time of commercial introduction. We have identified a mutation in the domain II S4-5 linker of the para-sodium channel that is associated with resistance to SPs in the cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus from Australia. The cytosin...

Aim: The purpose of this pilot study was to genetically identify and characterize Coxiella burnetii from Amblyomma varigatum ticks collected on cattle in North central Nigeria. Materials and Methods: A total of 40 partially fed ticks morphologically identified as adult A. variegatum ticks collected from cattle owned by Fulani pastoralists were evaluated for the presence of C. burnetii using PCR...

Several conclusions of importance to studies on the epidemiology of heartwater were drawn from an investigation in which the numbers of adult Amblyomma hebraeum ticks, to which a closed herd of Hereford cattle were exposed over a period of 6 1/2 years, were manipulated. With a tick Cowdria ruminantium infection rate of 3-5%, an endemically stable situation was created by dipping the herd only w...

Tick DNA samples from dogs in Japan were examined for Ehrlichia infection by 16S rRNA gene-based PCR and sequencing. Three positive samples were detected from Haemaphysalis ticks, and higher levels of similarity (98.46 to 99.06%) were found to recently detected Ehrlichia spp. from cattle ticks in Tibet, Thailand, and Africa.
