Aims: The present study is to evaluate the effect of internal fixation with cancellous bone screws in the treatment for femoral neck fractures. Methods: A total of 64 patients with femoral neck fractures hospitalized at our hospital from January 2014 to December 2014 were included in the present study. The 64 patients were randomly divided into Con group (internal fixation by thread needles; n ...

BACKGROUND Uncemented fixation of components in joint arthroplasty is achieved primarily through de novo bone formation at the bone-implant interface and establishment of a biological and mechanical interlock. In order to enhance bone-implant integration osteoconductive coatings and the methods of application thereof are continuously being developed and applied to highly porous and roughened im...

OBJECTIVES Up to 40% of unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) revisions are performed for unexplained pain which may be caused by elevated proximal tibial bone strain. This study investigates the effect of tibial component metal backing and polyethylene thickness on bone strain in a cemented fixed-bearing medial UKA using a finite element model (FEM) validated experimentally by digital image...

We report a case of primary hyperparathyroidism associated with prolonged hungry syndrome (HBS) after parathyroid adenomectomy in a 10-year-old girl. Bone mineral density (BMD) revealed severe loss of cancellous BMD. Overt bone disease, high alkaline phosphatase, decreased cancellous BMD and a large adenoma can be used as preoperative predictive risk factors of HBS in children.

Treatment of large segmental defects using conventional autogenous iliac crest bone graft can be limited by volume of cancellous bone and donor site morbidity. The reamer-irrigator-aspirator (RIA) technique allows access to a large volume of cancellous bone graft containing growth factors with potency equal to or greater than autograft material from the iliac crest. The purpose of this study wa...

The concentration in collagen of hydroxypyridinium cross-linking amino acids was measured in samples of bone and cartilage from human subjects aged from 1 month to 80 years. Cortical and cancellous bone samples were dissected and analysed separately. In both bone and cartilage, the content of this mature form of cross-link reached a maximum by 10-15 years of age (the amount in cartilage being 5...

There are many diseases which cause detrimental changes in the trabecular structure of cancellous bone, leading to mechanical failure of the tissue. One approach to understanding the mechanisms of these diseases is to create idealized models that recreate the morphology of the tissue. This paper presents a partial development of such a model. Further histological methods must be developed befor...

It is assumed that the activity of osteoblasts and osteoclasts is decreased in bone tissue of aged individuals. However, detailed investigation of the molecular signature of human bone from young compared to aged individuals confirming this assumption is lacking. In this study, quantitative expression analysis of genes related to osteogenesis and osteoclastogenesis of human cancellous bone deri...

The bone-bonding behaviors of various biomaterials have been extensively investigated. However, the precise mechanisms of bone bonding have not yet been clarified, and the differences in interfacial behaviors of biomaterial bonding with cancellous bone and cortical bone have not yet been understood. In this study, strontium-containing hydroxyapatite (Sr-HA) cement, in which 10% calcium ions wer...

Bone tissue mechanical properties and trabecular microarchitecture are the main factors that determine the biomechanical properties of cancellous bone. Artificial cancellous microstructures, typically described by a reduced number of geometrical parameters, can be designed to obtain a mechanical behavior mimicking that of natural bone. In this work, we assess the ability of the parameterized mi...
